Passenger boardings on trains almost doubled between 1985 and 1995, yet the actual number of trips made by passengers increased by only 38 percent over the same period. The reason for this discrepancy is that at least two boardings are counted when a passenger must take more than one train trip to get to the final destination of his or her trip.

Which of the following, if true, best helps explain why the increase in boardings exceeded the increase in the number of train passengers between 1985 and 1995?

(A) Between 1985 and 1995, the number of train stations increased dramatically. Incorrect

that doesnt mean each station counted as a trip destination

(B) Between 1985 and 1995, the number of train lines decreased significantly. Incorrect

irrelevant

(C) Between 1985 and 1995, the proportion of train trips requiring passengers to change trains en route to their final destinations increased significantly. Correct

so number of trip increase than number of people

(D) The proportion of business travelers using trains increased significantly between 1985 and 1995 relative to the proportion of pleasure travelers. Incorrect

not helpful

(E) The average seating capacity of passenger trains increased significantly between 1985 and 1995. Incorrect

not related with argument

Passenger boardings x2 but # trips increased 38% because # boardings are counted when passenger goes from train to train.
Pre-think: The number of train stops increase between source and destination.

(A) Between 1985 and 1995, the number of train stations increased dramatically.
We want to know the number of trains that one has travel to and from not the number of stations.

(B) Between 1985 and 1995, the number of train lines decreased significantly.
Same reasoning as A.

(C) Between 1985 and 1995, the proportion of train trips requiring passengers to change trains en route to their final destinations increased significantly.
Yes! This is in line with out prethink

(D) The proportion of business travelers using trains increased significantly between 1985 and 1995 relative to the proportion of pleasure travelers.
# travelers? This is not relevant since the number of travelers does not represent number of stops they have to transition to go to their destination

(E) The average seating capacity of passenger trains increased significantly between 1985 and 1995.
Capacity? We care about # trains. Out.
