Pat bought both carrots and onions from a store. If each carrot cost $1.10, each onion cost $0.50, and the purchase of carrots and onions totaled $11.00, what total number of carrots and onions did Pat buy?

A. 10
B. 11
C. 12
D. 13
E. 16

Loved the question :heart :heart

1.10c + 0.50n = 11.00

Check the red part multipled by any whole number will result in amount as -

1.1 * 1 = 1.1 ( 11 - 1.1 is not divisible by 0.50)
1.1 * 2 = 2.2 ( 11 - 2.2 is not divisible by 0.50)
1.1 * 3 = 3.3 ( 11 - 3.3 is not divisible by 0.50)
1.1 * 4 = 4.4 ( 11 - 4.4 is not divisible by 0.50)
1.1 * 5.5 = 5.5 , ( 11 - 5.5 is divisible by 0.50)

11.0 - 5.5/0.5 = 11

So, We have 5 Carrots and 11 Onions, so PAT can buy 16 items, Answer must be (E)

Yes. It looks an easy one. But it is a good and a tricky one :)

Thank you!

Nice.! I have solved it and have mentioned my approach just before your Post. :)
I guess the fact that it is a PS question and you know that it will have a unique solution itself makes the question a bit easier.
