Hi Paul:
A few questions and your honest opinion, please! I'm applying for a Fall 2008 admit.
28/Vietnamese-American/female
GMAT: 710 (Q47, V41), AWA 5.0
Undergrad GPA: BA Sociology, 3.65 from Top 20 University, graduated with distinction in general scholarship, Honor Roll almost every semester enrolled
Other: Kotler Certified Marketing Manager, post-grad course in Integrated Marketing Communications. Going to enroll in a Quant course this Fall but won't be completed by the time I submit my apps...
Work Experience: Over 7+ years in marketing. The first four in marketing communications with a privately held software company. The last 4 with a healthcare informatics start-up that was eventually acquired by a global corporation. I started as a Marketing Specialist and have been given multiple promotions where I'm now a Marketing Manager overseeing 1 direct report and an annual budget of $3.2 million. My scope of responsibility has grown from one to three product lines, from NA to global, and from marcomm to a broader marketing operations role. I report directly to the General Manager.
Extra-curriculars: 3 years of tutoring in the local community, including at-risk junior high school students, remedial hs english students, and teenagers on probation for violent crimes. In addition, I participated in campus recruitment efforts for underserved minorities--encouraging them to go to college. Finally, I was a writer for an Asian American newspaper. Post-college, I've spent the majority of my time running: training for marathons, training other people to run their first marathon, and volunteering my time at local races I don't participate in (including as director for a few races). In addition, I enjoy muay thai kickboxing, food, and travel.
Goals/Reason for MBA: Earlier this year, I was offered a promotion to Sr. Manager position which I passed on, because I did not feel I was qualified (this definitely won't go on the app). I want to go back to school and learn business fundamentals and best practices while my career is on the upswing. On my way to the top, I want to be able to make sound business decisions rather than shooting from the hip and going with my gut as I currently do. While my instincts haven't led me astray yet, I feel that an MBA would round out my education/qualifications (my undergrad degree is pretty irrelevant to what I do now) and give me a better understanding of other areas in business. I want to stay in the healthcare field in a marketing function but perhaps move out of healthcare informatics and into biotech or healthcare administration.
I currently live in the SF Bay Area and would like to return within a few years of graduation Since I have never lived outside of the Bay Area, I feel that business school is a good opportunity for me to do that.
Target schools:
Harvard (super reach, I know)
Kellogg
Fuqua
Columbia
Haas
Stern (maybe, although the healthcare program is weak and the marketing program seems to lean heavily towards B2C)
I've pulled this list based on schools that have strong Marketing programs and that offer healthcare concentrations (except Stern). Aside from Wharton, are there any other schools I should consider? Am I being unrealistic and aiming too high?
What do you see as strengths and potential weaknesses that AdComs may call me on?
Thank you very much for your time and assistance. Your book has already proven invaluable!
