Hi,

Could you please let me know which colleges I should be applying to?


GMAT: 700 (Quant:46, Verbal:40, AWA: yet to recieve official score)

Undergrad: 72% overall (78% --last 2 years)

Work Experience: 3years (IT)

Significant achievements:

1.School Prefect
2. School Tennis Champion
3. 2 awards from the company(1 for customer satisfaction, 1 for performance)


My concerns:

I fear I fall in the IT/Indian/Male category. From what I have read in some other forums, this category represents 80% of the indian MBA applicants. I fear that I will be one out of the many such applicants.

I have to somehow prove, through my essays, that I am unique by highlighting experiences in my life(even though they are not very significant).

Colleges which I am planning to appy to:

1. Cornell
2. NYU-Stern
3. Darden
4. Purdue-Krannert
5. Rotman-Toronto
6. London Business School

Could you please let me know what chances I stand in getting an admission in the above colleges. Moreover, I would appriciate if you could let me know some colleges in which I would stand a good chance and which i have missed in the above list.

I plan to apply this year(for the Fall 2008 course).

My essays have reached their "first draft" stage. I plan to send out my essays to my friends and professors for evaluation.

My apologies for the delayed response. It's been busy lately. You haven't really given me enough to gauge your chances at schools, but given your GMAT score and significant achievements (which in the case of the school achievements are too old and in the case of the work achievement don't necessarily show leadership), your chances at London, Stern, and probably Darden are not good (though your GMAT is fine for them). Your odds are better at Cornell and Rotman, and best of all at Purdue, where they are probably decent/good. In order to mention other school you should consider I would need to know your post-MBA goals. Sorry again for the late reply.

Hi Paul,

After the MBA programme I would like to pursue a career in Marketing, preferably Marketing Research. I've heard that doing a sales job before moving into Marketing would be a good idea.

However, I do not have much exposure in this field. There are a few instances though, where I have been able to display some Marketing skills(mostly when interacting with clients).

These are my short term goals:

In the next 5-10 years, after the completion of my graduate degree, I would like to become a marketing executive for either a well established company or a startup. I believe both companies would offer a unique work environment. For example, a well established company would already have all its systems in place and would already have established itself in the market. Also, such a company would already have a customer base, Here I see myself as holding a position where I could make strategies to expand the current customer base while keeping the current customer base happy(by finding out their wants).
A startup company would not have a well established customer base and would have to prove itself in the market. Here, I see myself holding a position in which I can contribute to the initial planning and strategy involved to enter a market. I see myself as using my logical expertise in extrapolating market data to provide market entry strategies. I would also have to use my interpersonal skills to interact with potential customers and convince them to use our products.

Thanks. Given your marketing goals and what I know of your profile you may have a chance at Duke, Texas, and UNC and will have a chance at Wisconsin, USC Marshall, and Indiana--all ranked marketing programs. The key issue will not be that you are "Male-Indian-IT" but that you be able to show real leadership and impact in and outside or work and -- as you noted -- that you be able to emphasize all that is unique about you.
