Thank you Paul. Also,

1.Of the schools u have mentioned which have the maximum placements in consultancy?

2. And also dont you think my lack of work experiance wil be a major hurdle for schools like cornell.

3. Am planning on elaborating on the exracurriculars and aspects of work experiance that i have mentioned in my previous post. Due you think they make good material for the essays?

opal,

1. Of the schools I mentioned, Duke, Michigan, Darden, and Haas place the highest percentage of grads in consulting (23, 22, 21, and 21%, respectively). In that regard, you may want to look at schools like Queen's, Washington (Olin), Georgetown, and Notre Dame, which are schools you have a shot at that place even higher percentages of their classes in consulting: 33, 27, 26, and 25, respectively.

2. Cornell has one of the youngest "middle 80%"s of the schools I listed. It's middle 80% ranges in age from 23-31. Other schools that skew young include Yale (24-31), Purdue, Rochester, and -- take note! -- again Notre Dame (22-31) and Washington (Olin) (23-31).

3. Your work for the blind school sounds like especially good essay material because it shows unusual impact and leadership. Your work experience is unusual, which helps you, but you will want to emphasize leadership stories in the essays, since it sounds like you have not have leadership roles for most of your career. You need to convince the schools that you really have been a leader at work.

4. Choosing among Duke, Darden, and Yale, I would go with Darden for reputation and percentage of grads in consulting. Next I would take Yale for general quality reasons, even though Duke trounces Yale in percentage of grads placed in consulting. I would still take Yale.

Good luck,

Dear Paul,
1.you mentioned schools like queen, olin etc as one's at which i had a good shot..... do u think colleges like Michigan and Duke are beyond my reach?
give me ur frank opinion. Of the top 10 schools i was planning on applying to Michigan Ann Arbor because i really like its General Management Program.
do you think i should drop this school and maybe concentrate on some other school ranked lower?
2. The other schools that i was thinking of were
a) Georgia Institute of technology
b) Pennsylvania State University
c) University of Maryland
d) University of georgia Terry.
what do yo think of these schools and also If i apply to Notre Dame or Olin i need to replace it with one of the schools listed above. Could u suggest which one is the most appropriate.

Also Paul, I come from that part of the subcontinent where not many people would pursue a MBA. and a woman pursuing a MBA abroad is almost unheard of.i have been groping in the dark all this while. but your advise has really helped me a lot.
Thank you.

opal,

Well, you can and should use the fact that you are a woman to your advantage in the application process. It certainly sets you apart from the vast majority of *male* applicants from the subcontinent and in that respect improves your odds of admission.

I certainly do not think Michigan and Duke are beyond your reach. And your list of Georgia Institute, Penn State, Maryland, and Georgia Terry tells me that you are aiming too low. You have a 720 GMAT! These schools are your safety schools -- unless there is some red flag in your profile that I missed? So, yes, Notre Dame and Olin would replace the four you mentioned, and, yes, you should have some schools like Michigan and Duke in your mix because they could well admit you.

Just make sure you besiege them with leadership and impact stories.

Good luck,

Aditi,

Two years' work experience is not a red flag, in the sense of a negative that needs explaining away. It's a potential weakness that can be turned into a positive if you emphasize that you've had atypical leadership and impact for someone with your experinece and if you make a good case for why you need an MBA *now.* Two years' work experience is on the lower edge of the typical 80% range for most schools, which means it's perfectly acceptable.

Good luck,

Dear Paul,
i have submitted most of my applications except a few due in jan.
I have kept your suggestions in mind about the essays and showcasing the leadership experiance. and i think i have done a decent job.
i have received my first telephonic interview invite from the OHIO (FISHER) School of Business. Do you have any recommendations for the interview?
And if it is of any use a lady from the Tha MBA recruiting and Admissions Office is conducting the interview.
regards,
Opal

Dear Paul,
I have an option of applying, either in round 3 for Darden or Round 2 for Yale or Duke. Which one school would you recommend?
Also is Yale a good choice for people aspiring to work in Non IT Business Consultancies?

Regards,
Opal

Opal,

I would go for Duke because the odds are low for third round and because Duke places 23% of its MBA class in consulting vs. only 10% for Yale.
