yes, perhaps sounds more formal and correct here. But I would like to know more technical differences.

The sentence "perhaps" -- it is saying that Titanic was among the one of the biggest and that's sure! It could be even the biggest.

"may be" -- it's not sure that Titanic was the biggest; it is possible but not sure!!

Remarks, anyone...??
