It's hard for me to assess how competitive I might be and what tier of B-schools I should apply to, because not too many people seem to have similar backgrounds to me.
Demographics: Female, 25, Canadian
Ugrad: 3-year B.Comm from Concordia University in Montreal, major marketing. (For those unaware, this is equivalent to a 4-year ugrad outside Quebec, because we have CEGEP that takes the place of Freshman year.) I'm a bit concerned here because though Concordia's John Molson school is AASBC-accredited, it's not a "name" school like McGill or U of T.
Ugrad GPA: 4.1/4.3 (translates to roughly 3.96/4 once A+s are converted to As) - was ranked first in class, graduated with great distinction. Won numerous academic scholarships and awards.
GMATs: Haven't taken yet. Been scoring between 690-730 on practice tests so far.
Work experience: 3 years (will be 4 by next fall) full-time at a advertising agency catering to the nonprofit sector. Several promotions quickly; currently managing the entire accounts department - supervising 2-3 account managers, managing campaigns for large nonprofits all over North America. Prior to that I had internships and part-time experience while a student only.
Professional associations: Through my company, I regularly attend conferences and events hosted by the AFP, DMFA, DMA Nonprofit Federation, CMA, etc.
Extracurriculars and other: Very little, unfortunately. I know I'm weak in this area.
Goals: I'm loving agency work at the moment. But am reaching the point where there aren't really any rungs left to climb within my agency. I see two main career paths open for me right now: make the leap to commercial advertising on the client-side, but for a large, well-known agency, or transition from the agency side to the client-side of the nonprofit sector, as development director or similar. I'm aware that having two different goals and being undecided on which one to pursue isn't the greatest situation to be in. It's a real dilemma.
Programs considering: In Canada, Schulich's (York University) MBA program with nonprofit specialization. McGill just because it's local and I could do it part-time while working, though the program itself seems to fit my needs less. Also wondering about my chances at U.S. schools and whether I should even bother looking at top schools. Also looking at non-MBA programs that would give me more of an edge in commercial advertising, such as Medill's IMC program at Northwestern. If I want to break out of Quebec (which I will have to because being anglophone here seriously limits one's options) then I need more "name" credentials, which is one of my main goals with whatever program I pick.
Any advice? How might a B-school view a candidate like myself?
