Could you please let me know which colleges I should be applying to?
GMAT: 640 (Quant:42, Verbal:35, AWA: yet to receive official score) I will try again because I think I can get over a 650.
Undergrad: University of San Diego gpa 2.95- computer science.
I am 27.
I have not taken the normal work route and hopefully that makes me unique and will outweigh my gpa and gmat shortcomings.
I have been a professional equity day trader for the past 4 years. During my junior summer in college I had a good internship experience in New York at a large investment bank on their trade floor, but because I graduated college in 2002, the banks were cost cutting and had a hiring freeze, and I was not extended an offer.
Instead, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a professional
trader and stay in san diego. I found a trading office that provided trading software and high speed connections to the various exchanges and joined the trading group. I funded myself in the beginning with a small amount of capital and continue to trade my own capital today. These past four year I have surpassed my yearly profit goals consistently. Even though I traded for myself (self employed) I have had managerial experiences. I managed trade floor operations and I was in charge of IT for two and half years at the company. I did this while I was trading my own account.
Last year I decided to concentrate on my trading goals, left the office and quit my responsibilities there and moved to a home office and it worked. I had great success trading last year. At the beginning of this year, I moved to New York City to work for a small automated trading company to start/head their foreign exchange trading division.
Throughout college and the 4 years after when I was trading, I also ran a small IT consulting business. I built this from the ground up and had around 100 at-home clients and a couple small businesses.
I have actually been my own boss and have never had to work for anyone, except for my internship at the bank. Even though I was working for my trading company, the two partners considered me integral to the company and actually offered me a partnership deal, which I declined and instead moved home and focused on trading.
The reason I would like to go to business school is transition from
trading into venture capital. I am actually kinda burnt out on trading. I have always been a true entrepreneur and an mba would give me good credibility to start a company.
Does my work experience make up for my shortcomings on gpa and gmat for me to even have a chance at ucla or usc? My fear is that if I retake the gmat and get a lower score then my chances will really be shot, but maybe not.
Colleges which I am planning to apply to:
1. UCLA
2. USC
3. Irvine
4. pepperdine (1 year program) if all else fails.
Thanks in advance,
