Thanks for your time and patience on this forum! I have been reading a lot of the other posts and your advice is great. I was wondering if you could take a look at my profile and make any suggestions.
29 year old male from the States
3.1 GPA / 620 GMAT
8 years work experience in a somewhat unique industry (professional services marketing)
- steady promotion (5 consecutive promotions within the same company)
- currently a manager and oversee the work of two full-time individuals and one intern
- have several examples of teamwork and leadership which I worked in my essays
In addition to my regular job, I have co-own a startup company with 3 friends (we are moving into our third year and revenues in 2007 were just over $230,000)
I have volunteered with the same organization for the past 4 years (with leadership roles the past two years). It's a non-profit org that raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I have been a coach for the triathlon team the past two years.
Outside of work and volunteering: I am involved in triathlons and recently completed an Ironman
So far I have applied to Darden, McCombs, Kenan-Flagler and Goizueta. I'm also thinking about applying to Owen. What are your thoughts on those schools, my chances of being admitted to them (or others?) and my profile? I realize my GPA and GMAT are low for these schools, but I'm hopfull that my story, essays and interviews compensate for them.

My apologies for the tardy reply. I like your profile very much, except for that GMAT. You appear to have done all you can to compensate for the score professionally and extracurricularly. However, I think it may be a showstopper for you at Darden and Texas. I think your odds are a little bit better at UNC and Emory, but they are still technically speaking longshots because of the GMAT. Frankly, if you were an applicant from a less common demographic I would be more optimistic.
Aside from accenting your leadership and extracurriculars you will have to execute extremely well in your essays (full of personality, dynamic, engaging), in your reco letters, and in your interviews. If you have some story about overcoming obstacles growing up that could also help you, as would having to work full-time during college to pay your tuition. As for other schools, you didn't mention your post-MBA goals ...
