Hi Paul,
I wanted to see what you thought my chances are at these schools:
MITSloan, Wharton, Chicago, Columbia, Haas.
I'd throw in Stanford and Harvard too, but I don't think I really have a chance there.
For Chicago, I am considering applying in July for their Chicago Business Fellow evening MBA Program in June. For the rest, I will probably try to matriculate with either 2 or 3 years of experience.
Basic and Academic Background:
I'm currently 22 years old, Asian male
790 GMAT (Q:50 V:51 AWA 6.0)
3.73 GPA, Dual BS degree in Chemical Engineering and Applied Math, Minor in Economics from Top 15 University. It would have been higher, at around 3.82 if I didn't screw up badly one quarter where I got a 2.4, which happened because I was sick and had a lot of stuff on my plate that quarter, both personal and college wise. I'm sure I can explain my bad grades that quarter to colleges)
Work experience:
I've been working for about 5 months for a small (150 people) risk management firm that is a highly respected monopoly in its field (providing software and to a lesser extent consulting solutions to help banks manage their risks). Although outside of finance/risk mgmt the company is not very well-known, its client list includes every big commercial bank you can think of. In the job, I have helped a bank analyze and update its financial positions using our software, answering phone calls on implementation of risk management strategies, delivered presentations to clients, coordinated training for clients, etc. This is definitely not an IT job. I think I will be able to secure good recomendations.
In college, I was:
A residential advisor overseeing 30 freshman
Vice President of a 500 person residence hall
Treasurer for two different organizations, one a Chem. Eng. professional group and the other a cultural group. In both groups, I was a primary organizer of several events that were well-attended and pretty successful
Volunteer teaching immigrants English in order to help them pass citizenship tests, playing with their kids
I also ran a 3-person business selling textbooks to students at my university. Although I did not make a lot of money (about $7000 in sales, $2500 in profit), it was an interesting experience.
Although I'm not currently involved in any extracurricular experiences like community service and stuff, I know that I will be before I apply. I'm still deciding waht I want to do!
My Ultimate plans:
I want to do strategy consulting after getting an MBA, afterwards, I want to help run my family business (manufacturing and finance) for a while. Ultimately, I want to do something crazy. I'm not sure what, but I'm thinking about something like starting an organization to help Chinese immigrant kids get a better education.
My questions are:
For Chicago, what are my chances of getting into the Business Fellows program for Fall 2008? If it helps, my company and ChicagoGSB have close connections and many people in my company graduated from there. Also, how well does Chicago treat re-applicants? I'm thinking about applying there full-time 2-3 years down the line.
Although I like my job a lot, I have entertained the idea of switching to a top strategic consulting company or a top hedge fund 10-14 months from now, as I don't feel my company's name is strong enough, and it'd also be a good experience to work in a different place too. Would this boost my application?
If it doesn't look like I have a good chance, what can I do to improve myself? I still have a good 1-2 years before I start applying (except for chicago). I'm entertaining a couple of screwball ideas to do in my spare time, like helping political candidates, starting (or resuming) a business, writing a computer program to help casual investors manage their risks/optimize their portfolio, etc. I'm not sure what to do yet, but I know I want to do something crazy like that. I'm not doing it just to get in B-school, but because I think it'd be a lot of fun and would help people.
Any advice for me?
