“Indian IT male” :(

Aiming for
    LBS (dream),
    Chicago,
    MIT,
    NUS(backup only)
in fall 2010

1. Is it un-realistic to apply to these schools in R1 and R2 with my profile? Please evaluate.
Or 2. should I look for some other schools as well?
3. for Chicago and MIT, what should I focus on?
4. Howz the chance in Barkley Haas MFE for 2011 Jan intake? ( regarding MFE..I have strong programming background in Java/C++ and doing CFA also)

GMAT – 740
AWA 4.5

Interest – Asset Management in hedge fund/ibank

Total work Ex: 5.5 years till december 2009
( International – 2.5 years
India – 3 years)

Working on Equity Derivative/Interest rates trading tool - trade capture, writing pricing function for Market Risk, working closely with the Risk Analysts and provide technology consultation
Previous Exp – lead offshore team of 8 members in a production support project
    Few awards n accolades

Education – Professional Risk Manager (PRM designation)
CFA L2 candidate
B.Tech from NIT(REC) - EE

Extracurricular – decent in college.
Won accolades in Robotics and paper presentations etc…

I was planning for Columbia/Stern/INSEAD...but none of them are assisting with no-cosigner international loans this year...so only MIT/Chicago/LBS remain..because Stanford/Wharton are too elite to get into without extra ordinary profiles I think. Please correct me if I am wrong..

thanks :)

Somz,

You are correct regarding Stanford and Wharton. Your profile is not a cookie-cutter "Indian IT Male" profile: you have differentiated yourself fairly well with your PRM, your current industry focus, and your CFA. However, if you have no leadership outside of work since college then I'm not sure your profile is strong enough for LBS, Chicago, and MIT. They do seek well-rounded, socially engaged people. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't apply to these programs as long-shots. If you do, apply in round 1 unless something could happen to improve your profile before the round 2 deadline; then no harm in applying in round 2. Other finance-strong schools to consider: CMU, UNC, Texas, Georgetown. I think your chances would be better for Haas's MFE than for its MBA program. Regarding what you should focus on for Chicago and MIT, you need to emphasize your leadership and what differentiates you from other applicants.

Hope this helps,
