Hi I am thinking about an MBA and need some help deciding on which schools I should apply to.
Education:
Work experience:
Extras:
Why MBA:
I want to pursue an MBA to make the transition to corporate sustainability and CSR.
Schools:
I've looked at Michigan Ross, Duke Fuqua, Cornell Johnson so far since they seem to fit my sustainability focus. I am looking to apply for the class of 2019 (2017 intake).
How can I improve my profile to break into the top 20 schools? Are there other schools I should be looking at for CSR/sustainability?
Education:
- - US Male, non-white
- Graduated BS in Mechanical Engineering from a top 50 US News school, GPA is. I do have an upward trend. I had one year that tanked my GPA due to father being diagnosed with cancer and grandfather who lived with me passing away in the same year. I plan to use my optional essay to address this.
- GMAT - aiming for 750. I took my diagnostic, cold with no studying and scored a 690 so I am hoping this is achievable.
- Held leadership roles in undergraduate organizations: Engineers without Borders (sustainability focused, led an international implementation project; project lead), student government (vice president), received university recognition for sustainability leadership
Work experience:
- Will have 4 years work experience at matriculation:
- 2 years as an energy engineer and sustainability consultant working in a NYC sustainability consulting firm. I was able to identify room for added efficiency in our processes and aided in developing an in house tool using VBA to streamline data entry from our energy audits. This resulted in ~30% savings in time per project.
- 2 years as a sustainability assessments coordinator for a large private university - acting as the technical lead for the University's green buildings program, performing analysis on GHG emissions, energy usage and developing a sustainability strategy for reduction. I have led cross functional project teams, requiring the cooperation of many university departments to achieve certification goals.
Extras:
- - LEED AP Certification
- Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
- Volunteer with city's sustainability outreach and education group
- Plan to take 2 or 3 quantitative business classes to build an alternate transcript (hopefully these will be all A's)

Thanks for sharing your information - love the detail! So, you know you have a low GPA. What can we do about it? You're on the right track with your alternative transcript. Assuming you plan to target R1 later this year, I would consider taking 2-3 MBA level courses in Statistics, Finance/Accounting, and Economics and ensuring you do well in them to demonstrate your commitment and ability to take on the rigor of an MBA curriculum. While this will help, this doesn't get you out of the woods. Your GMAT is still a huge question mark, and I like your ambitious goal, but when you finally decide on your test date, focus on maximizing that score. Once you're happy with it, then you can shift focus. Since you're starting early, time is on your side...for now :D
Your work experience is decent, but I'm missing your leadership experience. It's tough to show this in a forum, I know, but I urge you to think about how you've made an impact on your team and your firm. What are some of your key accomplishments and achievements?
Your involvement/ECs are a bit light. With an interest in CSR, I would expect to see a bit more of that in your volunteer profile. Any options to get involved now in a meaningful way?
Finally, your post-MBA goal is a good start, but you have to get way more specific. Hone in on what your dream job would look like. The more detailed you can get, the better of you'll be.

Hi - thanks for the great input! I will definitely try to improve upon what you said. I have added more information regarding my work experience in the original post.
Lastly, I had a question regarding building an alternative transcript. I've seen many different theories on what kind of classes to take. In particular, other recommendations insist that undergrad level business classes are sufficient (especially if you were not a business major in undergrad). What is your opinion on choosing one over the other? I would love to get this step right - since I currently work at a university I can take advantage of all of their classes at very little cost.
