Essay Question:
The following appeared in an article in a consumer-electronics magazine:
"Company X's latest model of digital camera to be released next month, the TR12, is being promoted as the most portable, user-friendly digital camera available, and also an excellent bargain. It can be expected to live up to these claims, because Company X's previous model, the TR11, was universally lauded as setting the standard in these areas last year."
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.
My Response:
The argument that Company X's digital camera model TR12 will be an outstanding product in the market owing to its portability and user friendly features omits important concerns that must be addressed to substantiate the argument.Because Company X's previous model TR11 was successful last year, the company claims that the upcoming model will also hold the same position in the market and outperform its competitors.
Firstly, it mentions that the new camera model TR12 is going to be an excellent bargain without providing any further details about the pricing of the model. It fails to mention the comparison of the new model with any existing or upcoming products of other companies in terms of price and features like portability and user- friendliness. The success of particular product in a specific region depends on the usage of people in that area. The camera may provide certain features which do not attract the customer base and hence may not be too attractive in the market.
Secondly, the argument states that the Company X's previous model was a tremendous success and had set universal standards. Because of its success, the Company assumes that the new product will also be widely acclaimed and accepted in the market. It fails to state valid comparisons between the user base targeted, the country's economic health, additional features and cost. The new camera may cost more than the previous model and many users may not prefer to spend extra pounds on the new product. There are many factors which should be considered before making a statement about the success of the product.
Because the argument leaves out several key issues, it is not sound or convincing. If it included the factors mentioned above and cited valid examples and comparisons, the argument would have been more thorough and persuasive.
