If the gov't role really interests you - DO IT! Life is too short to make career decisions to satisfy others. And in any case, adcoms do value those with gov't experience. There seems to be this misconception that adcoms are these right wing, ultra capitalistic folks who have contempt for the civil service and anything gov't oriented. They're the opposite - remember that they are university employees, not hardcore libertarians.
You have an interesting background that just about any top b-school will find attractive (including HBS. Stanford and Wharton -- yes, you should and probably will apply to at least one if not all 3 schools), so it's really a matter of just writing strong applications and choosing 5-6 schools that you'd love to go to. As for specific schools, it comes down to what you want to do post-MBA, your personal preferences (large vs. small school), regional preferences for your post-MBA career as well as campus life (east coast vs west coast vs midwest vs Europe), and so forth.
