The figure above shows gas mileage at different speeds for all compact and midsize cars. John drove a compact car at 30 miles per hour for 1 hour and at 50 miles per hour for 30 minutes. Jill drove a midsize car at 40 miles per hour for 1 hour and at 60 miles per hour for 30 minutes. The total amount of fuel consumed by Jill’s car is approximately what percent of the total amount of fuel consumed by John’s car?

A. 80%
B. 90%
C. 110%
D. 140%
E. 145%

+1 for A.
Bunuel
Please check the OA. I took the mileage of "mid-sized car" for 60mph as 22.5 m/g according to the graph. answer is more close to 80 than it is to 90.

Answer is indeed B
consider for scenario 1 in which car is driven @ 30m/h for 1 hr.
then distance cover by car =30miles
where mileage is 20 m/gallon ----means car will take 1 gallon of fuel for every 20 miles covered
so it will tale 1.5 (3/2) gallon for 30 miles distance
Similar for other scenarios we can check for answer to be 90

At all points Mid-Sized car has greater mileage than compact cars. So straight away we can eliminate options C,D,E.
Had 4 options been greater than 100% the problem could have been solved by now.
But we have two options to look at- 80% and 90%.
Now, to avoid unnecessary calculation- we know the part wise gallons consumed (by looking at the graph).
Compact- Part 1: 3/2, Part 2: 5/3
Mid-Sized- Part 1: 4/3, Part 2: 3/2

Clearly, 3/2 is common (here Jill's car consumes 100% as John's car) & 4/3 is in itself 80% of 5/3. Hence the answer HAS to be much greater than 80%. Hence answer is 90% which is OPTION B.

it is not true, for Jill, both are 4/3. In other word, it is 8/3 and the formula should be 16/19 which is approximately 84%

Answer is more close to 80% considering the fact that graph shows mileage of "mid-sized car" for 60mph to be approximately 22-22.5 m/g
Would vote for A

Hi Bunuel,

For Jills second trip the consumption of fuel would be 15/11 as the graph is close to 22-22.5 miles/gallon. Can you please check the OA??

Alex75PAris how did you get this for John's part 2? part 2 = 25/15= 5/3

Where did 25/15 come from?
