Cost Price X 1.25 = SP
CP = 1000/1.25 = 800
Profit B's = 200

Selling Price = S, Cost = C, Profit = P
S = C + P

S(A) = 1000
P(A) = 20% of S(A) = 200
C(A) = 800

S(B) = 1000
P(B) = 25% of C(B) = 0.25 X C(B)

So, 1.25 X C(B) = 1000
C(B) = 800
P(B) = 200

Hence, both got same profit.

I got D. Given SP=1000 , Same for both A & B
Profit = SP-CP

For A,
20% of SP = SP - CP
CP = 0.8SP

For B,
25% of CP = SP - CP
1.25 CP = SP
CP = 0.8SP

Implies Profit is same.

for A --> profit is on S.P--> 20 % of 1000 is 200(profit)----(1)
for B --> profit is on C.P--> let C.P be x
therefore, x+25x/100=1000-->x+x/4=1000
and x =800. threfore 1000-800=200(profit)---(2)

by (1) & (2) we conclude that profit margins are same in both the cases..

Why are we assuming the cost is the same for both sellers? The question doesn't explicitly state that both sellers procured the product for the same price...

Trader A:

Profit = 20% of selling price = 0.20 * 1000 = $200.

Trader B:

Selling price = 125% of cost price.

Cost price = 1000/1.25 = $800.

Profit = 1000 - 800 = $200.

So both earned the same profit.

Answer: D.

We are  not assuming  that their costs are the same. We calculate each trader’s cost separately from the information given.

For A, 20% of the $1,000 selling price is $200 profit, so A’s cost is $800.
For B, a 25% profit on cost means $1,000 is 125% of B’s cost, so B’s cost is also $800.

Their costs simply  turn out to be the same .
