Survey forms options:

Form 4: Excellent. => 512

Form 5: Excellent. => 23

: Poor. => 231
: Unacceptable => 0

According to the spoke person, their customers have a higher opinion of Premiolex’s services than Cretazole’s customers have of its services. Because the majority of respondents rated their services as “excellent,” whereas in their competitor Cretazole’s survey, the majority of their respondents rated Cretazole’s services as “very good.”

According to Skeptic, the spokesperson’s conclusion don't necessarily follows. There is possibility that, the Premiolex survey asked participants to choose from among options that weren’t all identical to the ones used in Cretazole’s survey.

The survey for of Premiolex stating that majority of their respondent agreed for "Excellent" services also the skepticism of skeptic follows is : FORM 1.

The majority of the respondents filled with Excellent their, (in contrary to form 2) because they do not had the option of very good in the form as the skeptic suggested.

The survey for of Cretazole stating that majority of their respondent agreed for "Very Good" services also the skepticism of skeptic follows is : FORM 3

Because in form 4 the majority of them filled excellent option Also in form 5, the distribution among all options is almost same except last. So it don't follows. Also the options in the form clears the doubt of different form parameter as stated by skeptic.

Therefore the Form for Premiolex is : Form 1
And the form for Cretazole is : Form 3

Inference derived from Spokesperson's statement:
1 The respondents rated Premilox services as “excellent,” while those for Cretizole 's as "Very Good".
2 On an average,Premilox customers have a higher opinion of Premilox , than Cretazole’s customers have of its services

Inference from Skeptic's statement:
1 Spokesperson’s conclusion necessarily follows from the evidence he cites.
2 Result could be different if the comparison is not carried out with the identical parameters in both the areas.

So 1st one is for Premilox and 3rd one is for Cretazole

Why not E but C for Cretazole’s survey?
Apt0810 yashikaaggarwal bm2201 SajjadAhmad
Because the values in E are approximately distributed. We need the major values which is focusing only on "very good" criteria. And C is the correct form for that

bm2201,

4th Forum has 512 count of excellent.

Hi Rohi02,
4th doesn't satisfy the conditions for Premilox, since it would not be in sync with the statement of the spokesperson:

Inference of Spokesperson's statement:
1. The majority of respondents rated Premilox services as “excellent,” and Cretizole 's as "Very Good".
2. Premilox customers have a higher opinion of Premilox , than Cretazole’s customers have of its services

=>No of respondents who chose Excellent should be max and in 4th, it's 512, we need to choose the one which has the no. of respondents who chose excellent as maximum, 1st is a better choice.

Let me know if this helps.

thanks.

Project IR Butler 2019-20 - Get one IR Question Everyday
Question # 253, Date : 11-Jun-2020
This post is a part of Project IR Butler 2019-20. Click here for Details

Premiolex Corporation spokesperson: In our survey of Premiolex customers, the majority of respondents rated our services as “excellent,” whereas in our competitor Cretazole’s survey, the majority of their respondents rated Cretazole’s services as “very good.” That’s proof that—on average, at least—our customers have a higher opinion of Premiolex’s services than Cretazole’s customers have of its services.

Skeptic: I don’t think the spokesperson’s conclusion necessarily follows from the evidence he cites. What if, for example, the Premiolex survey asked participants to choose from among options that weren’t all identical to the ones used in Cretazole’s survey?

Select for Premiolex survey and Cretazole survey the options such that, in combination, the Premiolex survey and Cretazole survey would support the skeptic’s position and be consistent with the spokesperson's report of the results but indicate that the spokesperson’s conclusion does not necessarily follow. Make only two selections, one in each column.

Hi,
I don't understand the official expanation.

RO1
Since the conditions that respondents were asked to choose among were not the same in each survey, one way to compare them is to sort them into two categories: above average (Very good, Excellent), and average or below (Average, Below average, Poor, Unacceptable).

Since the majority of respondents in Premiloex’s survey rated its services as “Excellent,” the first and fourth set of results provided could be from Premiolex’s survey. In the fourth set of results, 99.0% of respondents rated Premiolex’s services above average (512 Excellent + 478 Very good, out of 1,000 responses). However, in the first set of results, only 51.7% rated its services above average (517 Excellent, out of 1,000 responses).

Since the majority of respondents in Cretazole’s survey rated its services as “Very good,” the third or fifth set of results could be from Cretazole’s survey. In the fifth set of results, 53.9% of respondents rated Cretazole’s services above average (23 Excellent + 516 Very good, out of 1,000 responses). However, in the
third set of results, 96.5% of respondents rated Cretazole’s services above average (454 Excellent + 511 Very good, out of 1,000 responses).

Thus, if the first set of results belongs to Premiolex and the third set belongs to Cretazole, only 51.7% of respondents would find Permiolex’s services above average, compared to 96.5% of respondents who would find Cretazole’s services above average. These results are consistent with the spokesperson’s report, yet they support the skeptic’s position that the spokesperson’s conclusion does not necessarily follow from the results.

Especially the highlighted part blows my brain.
Why the explanation applied different methods to calculate the percentages?
Namely, if fourth set of results, 99.0% of respondents rated Premiolex’s services above average (512 Excellent + 478 Very good, out of 1,000 responses), the first set of results should be 99.99% too isn't it ? (517 Excellent + 482 Very good, out of 1,000 responses).

What am I missing? Please help!

Thank you!

I like the fact that this question is wrong but so many experts just blindly step in attempting to justify the solution / provide explanation. For those that are stuck in this question and seeking for a confirmation - this is a wrong question don't worry to much and it is better spend time on the next question.

Why we selected option option C for Cretazole survey
