I really appreciate your response. Will definitely work on filling the holes in my resume. I feel a little pressured to apply sooner rather than later as I know the US has a lower average for applicants, but will take what you said into consideration.

Yes, the age is of the essence - it is harder to get admitted for a full-time program if you are over 30 and impossible over 35. You don't need to have another battle so apply before you are 29 or 30.

Hello all,

New to this forum but wanted to introduce my situation briefly (or perhaps not so briefly). I attended Pepperdine University on a tennis scholarship where I majored in Business Administration. For those that don't know, Pepperdine has a very storied tennis program (one of only 7 or 8 schools to win a national title). I had a very successful athletic career there (3 time all american, team captain, conference player of the year etc, ranked 11 in the nation in singles and 8 in doubles at one point). Tennis was always the career I wanted to pursue.

In part due to naivety/being a bit of a dreamer I chose to attend Pepperdine as they were the top team in the country when I was being recruited despite having numerous opportunities to attend better academic schools. I was so intent on succeeding as a tennis player that I somewhat put school on the back burner and finished with a 2.99 GPA. However, this isn't what worries me. After graduation, I pursued a career in professional tennis, reaching 499 in the world within months before a string of injuries cut me down for two years. I have represented my country numerous times in Davis Cup (and I finally decided recently that I want to pursue an MBA. I have done part time work for my father who works in reverse osmosis plants (Business side of things) as well as helping my brother with the creation of his two mobile apps (media). I am in the process of starting my own business now (ergonomic furniture for school children promoting an active learning environment). I have yet to take the GMAT, but I will devote the next three months to it with the hope of getting above 720 and aiming for a Fall 2017 admission (by which time I will be 28). I guess with my rambling I am just wondering what sort of chances I have at top US programs (as I know those are the ones that tend to prefer younger applicants).

I hope you all take the time to read this and offer whatever input you can. I have had one foot in the door and the other out of it for too long and am now looking to fully pursue my career in business.

Sorry for the long post.

BB
Yep!
Totally agree. Being a professional athlete is a HUGE plus for applying to B-school. Not only is it competitive and hard. But it's pretty darn unique :)

Obviously where it comes to business skills, the best way for the schools to evaluate you is through the GMAT, so ace that and you are off to a good start.

Finally, it's not necessary, but if you can somehow make USE of your athletic experience in coming up with your goals that can help out (you want to found a national tennis camp you want to work for a sporting good company or get into sports management, etc.)

I should also mention that it would help (a lot) if you make some concrete headway with your business until that time (and don't forget to keep up some volunteer work!)

Best,
Jon

Thanks for sharing your profile. Lucky for you business schools love athletes. And as a graduate of a top 5 MBA and college football player I am a testament to that. Your biggest immediate next step is to knock out the GMAT, this will really help legitimize your profile as well as give you a better shot at a higher caliber of programs. Next important thing is to really do some self-reflection and creatE a compelling story that ties together your past, present, and future into a clear narrative explaining your rationale for pursuing an MBA. This will be very important for someone like you who has a very non-traditional work experience. If you need some help crafting this story, feel free reach out to us at Veritas Prep and we can get you situated!
