Hi Alex,
Please give a profile evaluation for a 28 year old Asian male.
- 640 GMAT (q45, v34). Took it 3 times already. Is taking it 4 times in a span of 7 months a bad thing?
- 3.48 GPA, Econ major from a top public university
Work Experience:
- 1 year work as marketing/project management in Hawaii for a travel service startup
- 6 months work in Vietnam as project management for a VN internet startup
- Last 2.5 years at a US startup for local community businesses and mobile devices. Worked very closely with CEO and CTO on this. Official title is "Project Manager" but I do much more, which I can clarify in the essays.
Extracurricular:
- 3 months teaching English in Vietnam
- Some volunteer sessions at local charities such as Harvest Food, Senior Center
Looking to apply to Haas R3 and both UCLA, USC for R2. I know my GMAT is well off each school's 80% range but I feel my unique work experience could offset the low GMAT. Do I have a realistic shot at the 3 CA schools, i.e. >40% chance?

Honestly, your GMAT is going to be a handicap.
Gone are the days where "unique profiles can outweigh lower GMAT scores" at the top schools. The reason is, the variance in caliber of applicants has really narrowed - in other words, there isn't as huge of a disparity in the quality of applicants as there used to be. More and more folks of a similar caliber applying to the top schools, and as a result, the difference between an applicant who got dinged and one who got admitted is narrowing.
Apply. Your chances are zero if don't apply at all. However, just know that your GMAT will hold you back, and to keep some realistic expectations. Even if your GMAT was 700+, a school like Haas isn't exactly a shoe in (and in a way Haas is very competitive because its location attracts a lot of high caliber local candidates as well as folks from around the world, coupled with the fact that it's a small school).

Taytay, my two cents to what Alex mentioned about the GMAT score.
I think we (all MBA applicants) need to understand the value of the GMAT score. 800 GMAT does not guarantee even an interview invite, let alone getting admission. Let us not focus on GMAT scores more than what it is worth. Think of the GMAT score as a bulb for your application. A score of less than 650 (or maybe even 700) for Haas, the bulb glows red. A score of 700+, bulb does not glow. A score of 780+, the bulb glows green.
Red - an issue with the score ( does not mean you are an automatic ding)
No glow - no issue (does not mean an admit)
Green - nice score ( does not mean an admit)
