Background
25 y/o Male, Canadian Citizen, Asian - Born in China, moved to Canada at the age of 6.
Canadian University - LOW GPA - 2.9 - Accounting degree -
Outside of school/work - I play rugby, in a competitive adult league. I've also completed a few triathlons.
- Assistant coach for youth rugby club
- I attend toastmasters regularly.
Work Experience
- 3 years at Big 4 accounting firm - auditing and obtained my CA/CPA. Project based, lead team of 3-5, maintain budget, ranked high among peers.
- Started my own business: small business consulting - offering accounting, tax, strategy, controls advice to small businesses (1 year)
Volunteer Experience
- 3 years - Junior Achievement - A non-profit organization dedicated to providing and education high school students of entrepreneurship. I advise a team of high school students each week on building a business. Actually creating one from start to finish. Including creating a product/service and selling that product/service.
Goals
1. Booth, Wharton, NYU, Columbia
2. Investment banking
Questions
1. Are my goals realistic, both in terms of school and work.
2. Where do I lack in my application? Do I need to be more involved within my company?
3. GPA - I would like to discuss the GPA issue on my essay portion. The reason for the low GPA is due to being complacent during last 2 years of school (I secured this job very early). But now I have my **** together.
4. I have a very 'asian' name - Xin (sounds like Shin), I was thinking of changing this to 'Shane' for the application, and for my future (career choice). Would this increase my chances of getting in?
5. Other thoughts/advice?

Hey there Shane (Xin),
Thanks for the post and sorry for the delay in getting back to you - the holidays and R2 apps have been keeping us busy! Onward to your questions!
1) Your list is pretty good - but your GPA alarming. It isn't just "a little" low which your GMAT (good job by the way!) would compensate for. It's reallllly low > have you considered building an alternate transcript? You have time and you probably should. So I'd say diversify into the entire top 20 because right now you're risky with that list
2) Other than your GPA, sure, get more involved. But you are involved somewhat so it isn't a huge flag. But if you can find something to do that really sets you apart or speaks to your interests, that'd be a nice little cherry on top. I'd spend more time on that GPA though...
3) Maybe, but we'll have to see and that'll depend on a school to school basis. The biggest thing right now is to build that alt transcript. I know I am repeating myself but it's important
4) Uhhh...nope? You're still Asian...a rose by another other name...
5) Focus on shoring up that profile and then let's talk in the summer leading into R1

Regarding building an alt transcript. Does this mean taking Internet courses? If so, how do I get to choose which courses are submitted for my GPA?
Lastly, I forgot to ask this earlier, but how is my work experience? Will this mean I'm compared to other CA/CPAs? And is it considered good enough work experience?
