General profile:
Male – Asian – Canadian
25 years old (26 at matriculation - though I doubt that makes a difference)
Education:
73/100 Undergrad GPA (this is about par for my program) – Top Canadian Engineering
BASc, Mechanical Engineering
GMAT:
Overall: 690 (Q47, V38)
(Scheduled to write in 2 months - shooting for 800 Q60V60, but for the sake of this evaluation lets say that I stay stagnant at about 700)
Work Experience: (3.5 years @mat and also 24 months of engineering coop)
Marketing Specialist (Pricing strategy) at Canadian telecom managing $300M portfolio. Lead new initatives that generated additional 10% in revenue YOY for portfolio. Acquired additional portfolio after two years, and lead projects involving five cross functional team members to generate additional $12M in year. No direct reports - have leadership experience training new hires/grads & leading project teams.
Extra Curriculars:
Charity fashion show director - Undergrad
Sponsorship coordinator for award winning Alternat Fuels team - Undergrad
Sat on the board of award winning NPO - After grad
Ran mentorship program for NPO (recruited students and found mentorship matches) - After grad
Junior Achievement - After grad
Hobbies: running (I've raised over $500 for an elederly care charity over two half marathons, training for my thrid), travelling (I've collect subway passes for various cities across asia/europe/north america), music (I play two instruments, and receive generally positive feedback when I sing @ karaoke)
Reason for B-School:
Short term goal: Work in marketing (product management specfically) in the high tech/consumer electronics. I possess a lot of the raw skills (technical education & co-op experience, tech industry work experience, marketing/strategy job function). Need the MBA + internship to bridge the gap since all job postings tend to look for prior experience + MBA.
Schools:
- Haas (Stretch)
- UCLA (Stretch)
- Tepper (Probably also a stretch)
1) Am I a competitive applicant at my target (stretchy) schools?
2) I feel pretty uncomfortable with my work experience compared to other MBA applicants my age (I've never consulted/banked/started a company/held an elected position). What type of GMAT will I need to make it in?
3) Are there any actions I can take to become more competitive in the next 5 months?
I agree that [urlhttps://www.accepted.com/mba/UCLAAnderson.aspx]UCLA [/url] and
Haas are stretch programs, but if your
GMAT goes up, they also aren't out of the question. Again, assuming a 700ish GMAT, you have a competitive profile for
CMU Tepper. Other schools you may want to consider: Rotman and
Ross.
Best,
Linda
