Could you please evaluate my profile:
30, Male, French
Gmat 720 (Q49;V41);4.5
Toefl IBT 115
Spanish (Practical), German (basics)
M.Sc Engineering - Electronics (2004)
Experience 6.5 years in physical Security Systems design and installation supervision (mainly for Oil&Gas industries)
- 1.5 year deputy project manager in France
- 1.5 years engineering manager in Saudi Arabia (managed 12p);
- 1.5 years deputy project director in charge of operations in Algeria (300p ; 63M€)
- 0.5 year bid manager (large projects >50M€) & chairman technical advisor in France (1300p group)
- 2,5 months backpacking in Asia (Shanghai & Vietnam)
- 1 year so far, launch & manage an engineering department in Bahrain, (managing 5p and growing)
I'm planning to apply to Insead & IMD for the Jan'12 intake
- I heard that a lot of French Engineers apply there... Do you think I stand a chance ?
- Should I consider a backup ?

Given the depth of your work experience outside your home country, you should have a reasonable chance of getting into INSEAD and IMD (both of which really value international experience more than other b-schools). Of course, there's no guarantee, but I think you can apply to these two without needing a backup (unless you are willing to look at other Euro schools a tier below, such as Oxford, Cambridge, the Spanish schools, HEC, etc. - and whether you do or not is really a personal decision). For INSEAD and IMD, it really comes down to not screwing up your applications, and hoping that you don't run into really bad luck (i.e. you happen to get an adcom who doesn't like you for some reason - and yes, since this process is subjective, it can have some impact).
