Can you please consider my profile and suggest the best fit for me? I intend to do a global MBA from the Top 20 as I want to change my sector and job profile. Currently, I am in the IT sector where I have got saturated and have less growth options for me. I would want to do Management Consulting (non-IT)

Little bit about me.
Country: India
Age: 32
Qualification: M Sc (Hons.) Economics & Master of Management Studies (5-Year Integrated Degree On-Campus program), Bits Pilani (Rajasthan)
SSC - 82.5%
HSC - 95.5%
Pass-out CGPA: 8.23 (out of 10), Jun 2003
GMAT: planned in Jun-2013

Work experience:

IT Sector - Jul 2003 till now (approx 10 years)

Oracle India Pvt. Ltd, Hyderabad - Oracle ERP Testing , 8 Years (Jul 2003 to Jun 2011)
IBM India Pvt. Ltd, Chennai - Sr Advisory Consultant (Jun 2011 till now)

- School Topper in English and Maths during HSC
- Received BITS Merit cum Need Scholarship in the Final Year

Also, as it is 10 years since I am not in touch with studies, let me know the best Self Study prep plan.

Thank you for your time.

Raj: Thanks for the posting.

My biggest concern about your candidacy is your age. Many business schools may consider you a bit too old to transition to management consulting career -- especially since the time you graduate you will be near 35 years old. Most of the premier strategy consulting firms tend to recruit much younger candidates so these mare gong to be long-shots. The more mainstream consulting firms are your most logical option -- and even these firms have some age bias. This is really important as a school does not want to have you invest so much time, energy and effort if they are going to be unable to help you secure the career you desire.

The next issue is that you come from a very competitive demographic - and there are many more candidates from India applying to T-20 programs than there are allocated spots. To distinguish yourself, you are going to need a very high GMAT score as well as very strong applications -- essays, recommendations, resume, interview, etc. This will take a lot of investment on your behalf -- from time, to energy to money -- to make sure that these are as good as they can be.

Lastly, I recommend that you do a lot of research into various schools within the T-20 that would be best for you. My initial reaction is to recommend such schools as UNC, CMU, Texas, Notre Dame and Georgetown. If you want some reach schools, I would recommend Michigan, USC and UCLA.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. Do let me know how much should be my target GMAT score ( I thought anything around 720 or above).. though I need to put in 3-4 hrs of study daily for the next 3 months..

Also, I want to look at the B-schools in Europe / Asia.. Can you recommend some good B-schools with a valued MBA (1-Year) diff from the Exec-MBA

Thanks and Regards,
