Hi all,
I plan to apply for an MBA for the 2014 Fall intake. What do you guys thinks about my profile? I am targeting top 10 schools including HWS.
* 27 years old / Belgium
* Bach+Master engineering at Belgian top university - averaged 76.5/100 magna cum laude (WES GPA conversion = 3.59)
* GMAT 710 (50q, 35v)
* Languages: Dutch, English, French, German
* Work:
- By the time of entering MBA, 36 months Procter and Gamble as project leader
- Founder of a IT consultant company, currently 4 engineers working part time for different clients
- IBM extreme blue internship (3months)
- Business analyst internship at Gartner (2 months)
- Independent software developer during college for about 3-4 years
* Community stuff
- president/board member of local youth council during college time
- Study coach for students with learning disabilities and lack of motivation for several years

You have an excellent profile and a remarkable corporate exposure. As per your profile and area of interest Columbia, MIT Sloan, Michigan Ross, Kellogg, Duke Fuqua and Darden are the B-School where all you can apply.
The above mentioned Business Schools have good acceptance rate and employment record. Also get in touch with the alumnus of B-School which you are targeting to know more about the B-School admission procedure.
You would need to cleverly prepare yourself for questions like the reasons you want to switch from IT to management, your rationale behind applying for a specific B school, so on and so forth.
The next step for you is to focus more on your application essays, recommendations for these Business Schools.

You have good profile. Here is what I think of various aspects of your profile:
Academic Capacity: Your GPA (from a top Belgian university) and your 700+ GMAT evidences your academic potential.
Work Experience: You will have 3 years of WE by the time of entering MBA which is a little less than the average work experience required by most B-schools in the US. However, it can be easily offset if the quality of your experience is great i.e. career progression, accomplishments at work, leadership stories etc. Also, you are working part time for your own consulting company which is very impressive.
Leadership Potential: You are working as a project leader which makes me understand that you have handled leadership roles which can be translated into impressive stories for your essays.
Extra-Curricular/ Community Service: Very good. You were president/board member of local youth council in college and since then have been coaching students with learning disabilities which demonstrates your natural aptitude for extracurricular activities and community service.
Now the next challenge for you is to present your candidacy in the best light in all the aspects of your application package: essays, recommendation letters, and résumé. Essays are the most critical part of the application package that tell the AD Com who you are. You may want to read my recent blog on essay writing.
