Hi varunsh51,
When
MBA Prep School evaluates profiles for MBA candidates, we do our best to assess how competitive an MBA candidate may be. The question is should the applicant target the:
Most competitive MBA programs with acceptance rates of 15% or below
Competitive MBA Programs with acceptance rates of 15% - 30%
Less Competitive MBA Programs with acceptance rates of 30% - 50%.
Based on what you’ve told us we recommend that you target the Less Competitive MBA Programs with acceptance rates of 30% - 50%. GMAT Club publishes acceptance rates here:
all-2014-mba-rankings-99812.htmlWe never want to discourage any applicants from reaching higher, of course. However, we think it's helpful for candidates to think about the acceptance rates of the schools they are applying to so they can target realistic schools. I have some guidance that I hope you will find useful.
Academic Profile
I see some details that might make you less competitive in the academic area. Your degree in Computer Science puts you in a more saturated pool of applicants, and you’ll face two challenges: standing out from that pool and demonstrating that you’re capable of completing (with ease and success) the fundamental graduate business subjects. You also have a slightly lower than average GPA. You can proactively address both of these trouble areas by taking non-degree courses through an extension program or simply completing a MOOC, for example.
If you haven’t sat for the GMAT a second time, I would recommend that you do so. While your score may fall within the target programs’ averages, you want to be above-average so that you can overcome any weak spots in your application.
Career Progress
You have four years of work experience, which means a large chunk of the applicant pool to your target programs will likely have at least a couple more years of experience. Your age isn’t a disadvantage, however, if you can show that you’ve had leadership experience and marked success (via the metrics for success used in your industry). You’ll need to apply that experience and success to the content you generate for essays and other application materials.
Leadership Portfolio
Based upon the information you’ve provided, I’m unable to comment upon your leadership experience and how it compares to that of other applicants to your target programs. Leadership experience, both inside and outside of the workplace, is something b-school adcoms look for in applicants. If you haven’t already had the opportunity to take on leadership roles at work or in extracurricular activities, I’d recommend that you seize those opportunities before applying.
Other Factors
You’ll need to have a strong career goal narrative in mind when you apply to MBA programs and you’ll connect that goal to the offerings at the programs of your choosing. Let your goals drive your school selection in other words.
We hope you find our profile evaluation useful and wish you the best of luck in your MBA application campaign.
Best of luck!
