Hi,
Could you please help me evaluate my profile. I took the GMAT (first attempt) 2 days back and scored a 700 (Q50, V34). As evident, my verbal score affected my overall score. This was bit of a surprise for me, as I was constantly scoring in the 36-38 range in all MGMAT mocks and GMAC tests. 34 is one of the lowest I have ever got in Verbal. I am contemplating whether to re-take the test or focus on applications with the current score.
Below is brief description of my profile
1. Indian Male - 29 years, with 6 years of work experience
2. Work Experience : I have been working with a Private Equity Fund since last 3 years. The firm is a US based fund with focus on investments in Asia. As a part of my job, I have worked on investment opportunities in diverse sectors. Based on my performance, I have been promoted twice in the last two years. Prior to this job, I was working in the Equity Research Domain for 3 years.
3. Gmat : 700 (Q50 , V34) , IR - 8 , AWA - awaiting result.
4. College info:
- Graduation in Commerce from Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University (top ranked commerce college in India). Score overall 73% in graduation
- Post graduation (MBA full time) from International Management Institute, New Delhi. Ranked among the top 10 student
- I have cleared all three levels of CFA
5. Target Programs :
Columbia Business School
Harvard Business School
NYU Stern
Northwestern Kellogg
Wharton
Booth School of Business
INSEAD
6. Post MBA Goal: Working in the financial services industry, preferably private equity / venture capital

Hello,
Your work experience and academic profile look strong (and congrats on the CFA, which also is a plus), and Indian finance professionals certainly have an easier time than Indian IT professionals in applying to top b-schools. That said, you’ll be compared to Indians overall and finance applicants overall (and to a lesser extent Indians in finance) and all those groups tend to be strong in all dimensions, including higher GMAT. I’d actually consider the 700 GMAT a slight weakness (though certainly not a deal killer) for the most competitive programs.
Given the above, I’d consider all the programs you list to be reasonable reaches of varying degree – with the exception of HBS, probably not a realistic target even “stretch.”
For the other programs you must differentiate yourself within your demographic and industries categories, perhaps by delving into your experience and the unique insights and perspective you’ve gained (i.e. make it come alive through anecdote and detail) in a way that is (a) relevant to your goals and (b) a prospective contribution to your classmates.
