Hi All,

I'm new here. I recently took the GMAT and now want to figure out which schools I should to apply to. A bit debt-adverse, I'm particularly interested in strong schools likely to grant solid financial packages. Your thoughts?

Profile:

Female, 34, white, and American, with math and international background
My GMAT: 740 (q 48, v 44, AWA 6, IR 8)
My UGPA: 3.7 in math ed. with minors in Russian, Spanish, and English, and university honors (top 50 school).
Master's degree in math ed. from Columbia University: GPA: 3.9.
Work experience: 10 years as part-time tutor, started own tutoring company, tutored math at top private schools in Manhattan and Tulsa, and (any thoughts on how to phrase the fact I'm a mom, but not exactly a stay-at-home mom?) managed young kids abroad (Russia, Ukraine, Japan, Israel, etc.).
I think I'm interested in finance, education finance, education administration, and strategy.

Where should I apply? (I can travel.) Where does my profile fit best, and why?

(And if anyone has a list of MBA programs ranked by lowest debt, that'd be helpful too.)

With your profile and a well constructed application, you should not have to worry about debt. Your profile will likely attract fellowship funding (for which you will automatically be considered by applying) due to the fact you are a female with a 740 GMAT and ivy league education. I would not be thinking about debt or "lowest debt" schools since all the top schools have plenty of fellowship money for US students with merit. You should be thinking about where you fit in best academically, professionally and culturally. Also where you want your network to be concentrated when you graduate and for the rest of your career. Any school in the top ten should be interested in you.

Tremendously helpful. Thank you, Bryant. Do I correctly understand that if I pay close attention to and construct my application around a strong personal fit, I am actually more likely to avoid serious debt at a top school than at other schools? (It may also be that my motivation to avoid debt--uncertainty about the specifics of my future--will naturally diminish as my sense of fit and purpose becomes clearer.) If all this holds, do you or others have a clear sense about which top schools I should first approach with my interests in finance, education, and education administration? Thanks again!

Hmmm... Finance education and education administration sounds more like an MS finance or MS in education to me, and I am not aware of any top tier business schools with that focus. Probably best to look for good finance MBA schools (think Wharton, Virginia, Duke, Chicago, Columbia, etc..) and then take some elective courses outside of the business school in education admin or something that could meet your desired outcome. Most MBA programs will allow you to take some elective courses outside the b-school.
