Profile Evaluation

Question

Hi! Could you evaluate my profile for MBA at Insead, Cornell, and Kellogg? My profile at:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/hohoanghue/

I will retake GMAT. Target is 750 or + since all mocks were around this score...

I am a 30 years old female from Vietnam. Currently, I work at a container port in vietnam which MAERSK is one of shareholders. I think I will get good LORs from my current boss (CFO) and my co-worker ( head of a department) since I have good performance at the company.

I plan to reapply MAERSK after graduation.

Hi Hue,

Your profile seems to be pretty good for the b-schools you have mentioned above. A 750 GMAT will definitely keep you in the running on assumption that you will submit a competitive application.

What i am missing in your description is more work related details. While you have progressed in your career, how has it been compared to your peers? What about work related achievements? Finally, what are your career goals? Does the position you are targeting at Maersk require an MBA or can you achieve that result even without one?

Hi

- If you can achieve that 750+, then all of these schools will theoretically be within your range, given your profile
- Your work achievements and accomplishments are commendable. In addition, the diversity factor will work in your favor - very few women applicants from South East Asia applying with ops backgrounds in ports. 
- The return to MAERSK may be a bit debatable....unless you can specify how an MBA can help you add value in a future role that you could otherwise not attain or not do as well at Maersk. Port resilience, capacity planning, demand estimations are some areas you might like to touch upon if relevant.

The thing is I am missing detail.

for starters things are good. You are Vietnamese and female, both of which should work to your advantage. But it's very very hard to give any sort of real evalaution without a REAL

I need a LOT more info from you - school name, employer name, titles, promotions, greatest achievements, volunteer work, sports, community service, religious involvement, leadership.. etc. before I can give you a real evaluation.

It will also be very helpful if you can elaborate upon your goals.

Have a look at some of the other very detailed profile requests on this board and do something similar and I'll be happy to get back to you.

littlegirl, I would be optimistic about your chances of admission at 1 or more of these 3 schools, with INSEAD and Cornell as your best bets. You have a strong career profile, a great GMAT score with good English skills, are in a distinctive industry, and above all are a female applicant from a country that does not send a lot of applicants to top schools. You are a little bit on the older side, but given that you are a female from Vietnam working in a non-traditional industry, I do think you should be able to craft a compelling story. I don't know all of the details pertaining to your background (such as undergraduate GPA, extracurricular involvement, etc.), but assuming all of that is strong and you are able to get a 750+ on the GMAT, you should be competitive at INSEAD, Cornell, and Kellogg. Hue, It is a pleasure to meet you and read your post. I see that you also know Tia. I talked with Tia a lot last year as she was going through the process. Small world! The shipping industry is interesting. Clients of mine who are working in shipping / distribution tend to write about the competition in the space, the reduced margins and consolidation. One such essay I am working on now covers certain business practices that are making competing in the space increasingly challenging. (She will continue working in the space as well after graduation). In terms of your profile, with a strong GMAT score I think you would be able to have a competitive application at Cornell and INSEAD. Would you consider the one year programs?
