Hi, Please help with a quick profile review
I am a 27 year old Indian Female. I completed my Engineering and have almost 5 years of experience. I started working as a coder at Accenture, and now I work with one of the Big 4s, in Mergers and Acquisitions, advising Investors and Private Equity firms in India, Middle East and South East Asia on their investments and helping conglomerates in these geographies on post merger Integrations and transformation synergies. This has been a huge career climb, for me, personally. I have worked with and as:
1. One of the biggest e-commerce firm in India as a business consultant advising the firm on how to close some of the loopholes
2. A coder at Accenture (German Telecom client)
3. An American consulting firm with its offices in India - Advising clients in India, Germany, North America and Japan on their tech transformation and go-to-market strategy
4. Big 4 - M&A consulting - Strategy (explained above)
My post MBA goals are : To work with Private Equity / VCs, and become an investor / PE founder, in the next 5-7 Years.
My undergrads are average from an average college, and I have a GMAT of 690. My job Is demanding and requires a lot of travel, I might improve this score.
My extra curricular include working with 3 startups on their launch and expansion strategy, winning in a national level event in my college (SAE BAJA), led and organised cultural events in college fest, was an active participant in the international student exchange program at school for 2 years, stints in scriptwriting and direction, Crossfit.
Target Schools - Tuck, Fuqua, Kellogg, NYU Stern, LBS, HEC Paris (Alumni recommendation), SAID (Oxford) (Alumni recommendation), Insead Paris. (I am aware I am aiming too high given my
Non -IIT background and average grades, Please feel free to give me a reality check)

Hi ATRIKHA,
Thank you for your post and for sharing your profile. Having a background in PE and Hedge Funds, I can speak firsthand to the competitiveness of the industry. Now with Deutsche Bank cutting 18k jobs in their equity division, the ability to stand out in job interviews becomes even more challenging (those 18k bankers with years of experiences and prestigious degrees will increase the challenge in finding jobs). The b-school brand will matter a great deal in fulfilling your short and long-term goals. With that in mind, I recommend you retake the GMAT; you should aim at 720+ overall score, primarily because of your undergraduate performance. If you are unable to get that score, then at least break the 700 overall score mark to be competitive in the selection process. I like that you have global exposure, and recommend you outline that experience in your applications (where appropriate). While you have undergraduate ECs, you must address your lack of community engagement for the past five years since leaving university. Indeed, your work demands are legitimate, so be sure to address this in an optional essay.

A few thoughts on your profile evaluation ATRIKHA:

- The academic arc, per your admission too, looks modest. Given you've not mentioned the college, is it fair to say it's a no-name one? That, together with the GMAT can indeed be a very big hurdle, unnecessarily undermining the various sparks of brilliance that exist. Add to it the fact that Indian engineers frequently score 20-30 points above a given school's average. While I hear you on your work demands, adcoms are unlikely to since most of these peers that you would compete with at these schools would have equally (if not more) demanding jobs. So am afraid that will just not fly - just the fact of the situation unfortunately.
- The professional trajectory and the transition you've made is the clear star of your application. It is not clear however if you've had 2 jobs or 4? The latter can make things a bit tricky in terms of stability. Nonetheless, the M&A role starting from a coder is a fantastic story and one that you should leverage fully.
- Not sure if you've done your research well but even before the recent financial turmoil, PE/VC roles out of campus are pretty rare to break into. So make sure you are able to help the adcoms see why it will happen to you compared to others, many who may even come with prior experience in that space.
- ECs matter in your MBA application. Assuming the startup involvement is recent, that should help together with things in the past.
- International experience is of a lot of relevance for European programs. School level stuff could be a bit too far back in time though. Schools would also want to understand some follow-through there.
