Hello,

I'm looking to apply to some American schools this round and next. Was hoping to identify some more schools to apply to and reinforce my strategy.
My profile is along the lines of -

25/M/Indian
4 years of full-time work ex as a Software Engineer in a large B2B Tech MNC in India
Diverse (but all very technical) projects. Some solid examples of leadership within and for the team, but nothing with a designated association
15+ Patent filings, 5+ Patent Grants, all from USPTO
5 bonuses and awards for performance
Extracurricular at work: graphic design, large scale event management and hosting, marketing strategies, etc.

UG from Top Private (non-BITS) institute, 8.00/10 CGPA
Varied extracurriculars at a large scale, with leadership roles and titles

Zero community service/volunteering

GMAT: 720 (q47/v41) (not inclined to give again, considering attempting the GRE before R2 Apps -> more my speed, confident of 330+)

What am I looking for in a school? More than anything else, opportunity. I want to stay in tech, so a school that can either provide good OCR/networking opportunities or has a strong tech-oriented alum base would be ideal. Beyond that, I do believe that most schools I am considering are relatively well known, and I would be okay going to a non-tech oriented school as long as its a solid brand.

Schools already applied to: ISB, NYU Stern

Schools I am considering for R1: Safe - Kelley, Emory, Foster; Target: Tepper, Duke, McCombs; Ambitious: Tuck
Other schools I am considering, mostly for R2: Ross (missed R1 deadline), Rotman, Anderson, Darden, KF, Johnson, Marshall. I think some of these will be a little ambitious for me, and a good GRE score, if available, can help.

What I want from you: Try and use the above information to help me figure out whether my choice of schools is misguided, and whether I should aim higher or lower.
Thanks in advance!

Hi tripledorado - Thank you for reaching out - I'm happy to share some thoughts.

To answer your specific question, I think your school list looks good, especially if you are able to score 330+ on the GRE. I really like that you are applying to a mix of safe, target, and ambitious schools. If you are not taking the GRE until R2, I'm wondering if you might move Tuck and maybe even Duke to R2 to take advantage of that higher score. Or could you still take it in time for your R1 deadlines?

You have a solid profile, but as I'm sure you realize, you being from an overrepresented demographic will make it a bit tougher. Your lack of community activities also works against you - when you say you have strong ECs, are they all in college, or is anything more recent? Is there anything you do at work beyond your day-to-day job that could be presented as an example of EC leadership (such as perhaps recruiting, mentoring, or a diversity group)?

I know you want to stay in tech, but are you aiming for a different function/role? It will be important to explain in your applications and/or interviews where you are headed (and why), and how an MBA from each of these schools best helps you get there.

I hope this helps - best of luck to you!

Hello Soterius

I do intend to apply to Tuck and Duke in R2, and will focus on the rest in R1. I think it's best to not rush the GRE, as I would not want to have it take it twice.
I like to think that my ECs from college are strong (leadership of 150+ member club, 2 years as student journalist, designer for national scale events (40k+ footfall), lots of mentoring and teaching) Let me know if I am overstating.
I do have quite a lot of EC at work as well, largely in the areas of event management, building marketing strategies + content and writing/editing for the company newsletter. I can definitely present a number of things from a leadership perspective as well. I have participated in recruiting and mentoring, but the scale was smaller and I do not think I would necessarily benefit from the instances I have to present.

I intend to transition to product management or internal strategy, and yes, I think I should be able to explain my reasons for that as well.

I really appreciate your feedback, thank you so much!

Kindly see my profile and let me know my prospects -
Age/Sex/Nationality - 32/M/Indian
10th - 86.33 % (all subjects)
12th - 87.33 % (all subjects)
Graduation - B.Com ( Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra) - 1st Division 62.44 %
Chartered Accountant (2012 batch)
I am a practicing Chartered Accountant (self employed entrepreneur) with 9 years of experience, leading a team of 5 on an average at all times. I am based in Agra, so exposure has been limited to small scale businesses. Clients handled - about 100 each year.
GMAT - 660 (Q 49, V 31)
President of the social club - "Alliance Club International - Agra branch"
Certificates in singing, table tennis, elocution at school level.

Looking for admission in IIM(A/B/C/Indore/Kozhikode/Lucknow) or ISB. I am confused that with the above score and profile, will I be able to get into any IIM or ISB. Any suggestions and / or feedback is highly appreciated. If chances to get into my desired schools is bleak, what schools should I try, given that Round 1 for most of the schools have finished.

Hi again, Anchal270789 -- please see my answer in the other Stratus Admissions thread to which you posted this, here. Best of luck!

Hi again, tripledorado - that all sounds great! You're right that your ECs from college sound particularly strong. Those will definitely help differentiate you. But schools also like to see additional current examples of leadership beyond your day-to-day job. Your additional EC experience at work sounds good on that front. Again, best of luck to you!
