Hi
ammu100,
Thank you for your post. It is great to hear that you are thinking about deferred MBA programs! Historically, deferred admission is more competitive for applicants than applying a few years into your career, but on the other hand it is a low-risk way to try to secure a seat before graduating.
That said, for Indian clients we would typically advise scoring 20-30 points above a target school's average, so around 750-760 to be a competitive applicant. A 720 wouldn't automatically prevent you from being considered given it is a holistic review process, but it may make you less competitive than your peers applying to some of the top US b-schools.
Successful deferred MBA applicants also will have already demonstrated considerable leadership through internships and extracurricular activities, either on or off-campus. It sounds like you have had some solid leadership experiences to date, and can continue to build these in the coming 2 years.
Feel free to send a note to
scott@personalmbacoach.com to further discuss your candidacy, school, selection and application strategy. There is still plenty of time to work together to put together strong applications. We regularly work with folks in India and can certainly help here via our
deferred MBA admissions consulting packages.
Best,

Hello, I'm Amit. Originally from northern India, I come from a small town. At the moment, I'm studying at a small college in my city. I'm planning to apply for a deferred MBA at a few top US business schools. It's my dream to study MBA at a top US business school.
Even though I am not from a top Indian university like the IITs or NITs, I still want to give it a try.
I just want to know if my profile is good enough to get into top US deferred MBA programs. The following is a list of my qualifications.
Name - Amit Singh
Education - Bachelor of arts (2.2 GPA), Master of Arts (3.8 GPA), Bachelor of business studies (3.6 GPA).
Leadership- High school football captain, college sports committee leader, worked for a non-profit for two years
extracurriculars - Played football state level & state level shooting competition.
cocurricular - Won many sports competitions at school and university level, won a marketing case competition at college.
* I've two bachelor's degrees One in Arts and the other in business.
* I'll also be preparing for GMAT this year and will try to get a score above (720).
* I'll be working for an FMCG company for two years as an area sales manager.
- Is my profile decent enough to get into top us MBA programs? What should I do in the coming 2 years to increase my chances and make my profile more competitive to get into my dream (M7) schools? Would a low GPA in my 1st undergrad degree affect my chances and should I apply on the bases of my second undergrad degree?
