Reason for Reapplying:
  • My recent rejection from LBS MiM has motivated me to seek feedback from this community. Despite a lower-than-average GMAT, I believe my unique international work experience, strong entrepreneurial achievements, and academic background present a compelling case for top-tier MSc/MiM programs. Should I apply for LBS's MAM program after this setback?
Hi ItsPA1 ! Sorry to hear about the LBS MiM rejection ! You seem to have a well-rounded profile, with impressive academic achievements, entrepreneurial recognition, and technical expertise. Your international experience in shipping and logistics, combined with innovative IoT projects and involvement in global entrepreneurship networks, sets you apart. However, to strengthen your candidacy for top MiM programs, improving your GMAT score is crucial, as a 600 will limit your chances. Additionally, refining your career goals to clearly explain why an MiM is the ideal fit for your aspirations will enhance your application. Consider focusing on your entrepreneurial journey and leadership potential in your essays, recommendations and alignment with the school values. With these improvements, along with your already compelling background, you can be well-positioned for success in future applications.

LBS MAM could be a good fit as well, as it’s more geared toward recent graduates with a strong academic background, who are looking forward to a Business/Data Analyst career across different sectors. Try connecting with the Student ambassadors for more insights. All the very best!

Thank you for your thoughtful and encouraging response—it truly means a lot. I appreciate your advice on strengthening my application and the recommendation to consider the MAM program at LBS.
One concern I have is the weight placed on GMAT scores in the admissions process. While I understand its importance as a standardized benchmark, I wonder why it often appears to be a defining factor rather than looking at the profile holistically. Given my strong quantitative background, including rigorous coursework in mathematics, operations research, and algorithm design, complemented by industry experience and certifications in Machine Learning for Trading and Data Science, wouldn't that demonstrate my capability to handle the analytical rigor of the program?
Do you believe LBS admissions would view this proven quant experience as a substitute for a higher GMAT score for the MAM program? Additionally, how can I better present my profile to convey my readiness and value to the program after being previously rejected from MiM?
I am genuinely committed to joining LBS and contributing meaningfully to its community. The MAM program is my final chance to be part of the school’s early career offerings, and I would love to understand how I can improve my candidacy.
Thank you once again for your time and advice!

This early in your career, you not being able to accept that your GMAT is a real hurdle in your path is like missing the forest for the trees- missing the core issue at hand. A Masters in Management is ultimately an analytical program, and if you are not able to demonstrate your basic potential for it, it will be very difficult to sway the Adcom in your favor. You may feel that you should be given some leniency because of your technical background, but remember that a top school will always find a more compelling candidate — someone who shows promise in all areas and makes an honest effort to hit the average score for their respective demographic.

Low GMAT scores are something the adcom has a hard time ignoring in young applicants. And why? Because they do not think you are at a critical stage in your career where you can not devote time to exam preparation — one that could change the course of your career. This speaks to your commitment to the program and your potential for getting recruited at your dream consulting companies. At this point, you can either look for programs that place less emphasis on the GRE/GMAT, or you can wait until you have more experience and head to flagship programs in a few years with a better score.

Dear Aanchal,
Thank you for your thoughtful insights and advice regarding the role of GMAT scores in the admissions process. I understand that a strong GMAT is often seen as a reflection of analytical capability and dedication, particularly for early career applicants like myself.
Given my quant-heavy academic background in Computer Science, complemented by projects in algorithmic trading, IoT solutions, and advanced certifications in data science and machine learning, I wonder if Imperial’s MiM program might be a better fit.
Do you think Imperial's MiM would be a suitable choice given their potential leniency towards GMAT for candidates with strong quantitative credentials?

ItsPA1 You could try and see if it works. IMO Imperial is somewhat tier 2-3 when it comes to management programs, so I don't have much experience with it. The career outcomes may not be great for foreign candidates, but of course, it takes a certain kind of go-getter to make things happen.
To give you honest advice, I would suggest using your technical skills to work with a technology startup or consulting firm for the next two years and then applying to a top-tier MBA. Tier 2-3 MiM programs are unlikely to take you very far in terms of career opportunities. After the MiM, you will neither be in touch with your technical skills (you will lose your edge) nor have the backing of a strong brand. Why put yourself in such a situation?

Yes absolutely, for two reasons

1) You will be able to clearly see where you stand compared to your peers (the indian demographic). This will help you plan how you approach top B schools abroad later in case you want to. The process will be a good learning opportunity.

2) If you get the admit, this is a low risk investment compared to the schools abroad at this point.

But you should keep in mind that you still cannot run away from the fact that you must improve your score. Literally, your life could change if you work on your score :)

Feel free to speak for professional advice

Dear Aanchal,
Would ISB's new PGP YL program make sense for my profile? What do you think given the competition.

My two pence: MiM is a waste of time and energy. Right now, you should build a career by gaining work experience and prepare for pursuing MBA education after 4-5 years. MiM will put you on a slow track, and quite likely you won't pursue MBA thereafter; even if you try, most schools would not be interested in an MiM wanting to MBA. The delta in your career post-MiM vs. post-MBA will not get bridged over time either.

I am planning to do MiM programs.

I would recommend that you gain 3-4 years of work experience and improve your score to 705+.
