Profile Evaluation

Question

Hi Paul,

This is a profile of a friend of mine who is also interested in pursuing MBA.
1) Basic demographic info:

Age : 26 years
Gender Female
Nationality : Indian

2) Educational Background:

Graduation from a Manipal University in 2006 with a Bachelors of Engineering Degree in Computer Science. Had a CGPA of 3.4/4.0
GMAT score : 650 (M:44, V:35) AWA : 5
Was associated with a few Clubs during Graduation.

Good pre-graduation Acads

3) Work experience:

Working as a Software Engineer in ST Microelectronics. Current Work Experience of 3 years with an expected Promotion this year.

4) Extracurriculars:

Was associated with a few Clubs during graduation. 
Good ECs at school level. like active participation is Sports, Fests etc
Participation at Events during Work.

5) Short/Long term goals:

Seeking a career in Operations or Supply Chain.

6) Schools:

Financing her MBA is a very important criteria for choosing a School.

A few shortlisted schools are:
Georgia University : Terry
PennState University : Smeal
University of Massachusetts : Isenberg
City University : Cass
Lancaster

Could you tell her chances in these schools.
It will be great if you could also suggest me some schools for her profile.

Nothing especially distinctive about this profile, but then she is not aiming especially high either. I think she will be competitive at all the schools you listed since her GMAT is near their average and schools cut female applicants a little slack on the GMAT score. Given her goals, she might want to consider the following schools, where she probably will have a decent shot: Michigan State, Arizona State, Ohio State.

Thanks a lot for the encouraging words.
Have a couple of more queries from her side.
1. How do you rate MSHRM and MS in Logistics (MLOG). Are these programs competitive in terms of job prospects and future growth.
2. What would you suggest for a candidate with her kind of profile. An MBA or an MSHRM/MLOG considering financial constraints as getting scholarship with her kind of profile seems less probable.

Sorry for the delayed reply; I've been traveling. If your friend's goal is a career in Operations or Supply Chain then I don't see the relevance of a master's in human resources development. A master's in logistics would be an excellent way to get into the Operations or Supply Chain sector. The MBA offers the advantage of being a more versatile degree and might help her more if her ultimate goal is management. But she could always use the MLOG to break into the industry and then perhaps earn an MBA later if she discovers that she needs it to advance into management.
