I am applying for admission in 2010 and would ideally like to attend HBS, Wharton or Columbia.
Female / US
GMAT: 690 (Q: 47, V: 38, AWA: 6.0)
GPA: 3.85
Undergrad: Top Public / Humanities Double Major / 1yr of Business Classes
Work: 3yrs at a Hedge Fund with leadership role, incl stock research / portfolio analysis / capital raising / open dialogue with investors thru writing of quarterly letters and producing monthly transparency reports, etc.
EC: Just recently got involved in after-school tutoring program that won't start until Sept
I signed up to take the GMAT again because I'm usually a lot better at verbal than I am at math, so I think there's room for improvement. I plan to apply to Columbia early decision and hopefully get my HBS application in during the 1st round. I wasn't planning on having to take the GMAT again, so I feel very stressed/pressed for time in terms of getting my applications together. I only want to apply where there is a legitimate chance of me getting in.

So you went to either UVA, Michigan, Berkeley, Texas or UCLA.
Also, I'm not really up to date on acronyms (other than txt msg speak) -- what is an IBB?
Anyhow, it's hard to say - there's certainly people like you at the schools you mentioned, but there's also plenty who got dinged as well (and for some that got dinged, their applications may not have been any worse than those who got in). Just know that there's no shortage of finance types who are applying this year (and no, being a female in and of itself won't be a factor). If you boost your GMAT to 740+ it may help a bit (but still not a game changer) -- regardless of your score, it comes down to how well you execute your application, and luck. From a practical perspective, I don't think these schools are out of your league - so you should apply. But if you're limiting your choices to only these top schools (or their peers like Kellogg, Sloan, Chicago), then you have to be prepared for the possibility that you may not get in even with a strongly executed application.

Since writing to you last I have updated my profile, and I was hoping you could re-evaluate my chances of getting into Harvard / Wharton / Columbia.
After my initial 690 GMAT score I decided to take the test again, and this time I score a 740 (Q:49, V:42).
