Let me know your thoughts on my chances for an admit at: Wharton, harvard, mit, columbia


28 year old male.

Education:

BostonU Masters in Econ and BA in Math (2001-2003, GPA 3.00<note masters done with undergrad>)
Northeastern U (2000-2001, GPA 3.58)

UC Berkeley (2008-2009, Coursework in math & stats, GPA 3.3)

GRE
Math: 800 Verbal: 720

Professional Exams
Actuarial Exams (of 9) :1,2,3,4,5,6

Research Experience
1.) Developed an arbitrage model under a UC Berkeley professor for the last 6 months.

2.) Worked at a top 5 econ consulting firm for 2 years as a research analyst, associate, and now as a contractor.


Work Experience
1.) Top 5 econ consulting for 2 years (LECG)
2.) Actuarial Analyst for 3 years (Liberty Mutual,AAA)

Languages
German,English

Skills

In short, I think MIT and Columbia are within range (but they aren't safety schools). Wharton may be a stretch, but still a possibility. HBS is a long shot.

The biggest hurdle for you is that your background is heavily analytical to the point where you'll have a hard time convincing the adcom that you are as great with people as you are with numbers. It's clear from your background that you have math skills. But whether you have strong enough interpersonal skills is going to be what you will absolutely have to highlight (almost to a fault) if you want to be competitive for the top b-schools.

Thanks for the reply Alex.

One of my letters will speak about the way I am able to captivate an audience. I suppose I should also mention pretty directly in my essays that I am quite good with people perhaps by using Tae Kwon Do instruction and tutoring as an example?

I'm actually not your typical numbers guy it just so happens that I spent a lot of time addressing my weakness which was once my analytical ability.

It's not that you *should* -- you absolutely have to emphasize your leadership potential. Right now, from your profile alone you will come across as a math nerd (and all the positive and negative connotations associated with being a math guy).

B-schools aren't getting a bunch of kooky creative types applying. Most of the applicants are analytical by nature, so they are trying to cherry pick those analytical types who have the strongest leadership potential (which has little to do with quant/analytics beyond a certain threshold).
