Hi Alex,
Could you please provide some feedback for me? I am planning to apply to b-school this fall for Sept 2011. I am currently targeting MIT, Wharton, Chicago, and NYU.
27 year old, white male.
Undergraduate degree: (Rutgers University)
-B.S. Chemical Engineering w/ minor in Economics (3.5 minor GPA; 3.15 overall)
- Member of Chemical Engineering and Economics Honor Societies
Undergratuate leadership:
- Student President, International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineers
- Vice President of Engineering Governing Council
- AICHE Member, etc.
I also took two business courses with UMass Amherst Online (4.0 GPA) to further bolster my business background.
Professional Career: Member of Johnson & Johnson Global Operations Leadership Development Program (GOLD)
- approximately 40 members/yr
- rotates associates through multiple companies throughout the USA, exposing them to a variety of operations based assigments (manufacturing, supply chain, quality, procurement, etc)
- 2+ years post program leading global supply chain projects and managing several product portfolios (from a demand planning perspective) with J&J, and now BASF.
Additional Leadership:
- Lead intern co-op association @ J&J
- Founded the GOLD newsletter
- Active in Community Service
- Hold several professional designations (Certified Supply Chain Professional; Six Sigma Green Belt, etc)
Since my second year at Rutgers I have had a strong desire to go to a Top MBA program to obtain an MBA to compliment my technical BS. I hope to study a combination of Finanace and Marketing to expand on my knowledge skillset and provide me the educational background and leadership training necessary for leading a large multinational operations organization.
Unfortunately I had to take the GMAT 3 times to reach the 700 mark, but I just completed the test this week with a Q:45, V:40, 700. I'm not sure what my essay score will be, however on my last go-round I received a 6.0.

I wouldn't worry about taking the GMAT multiple times if it's clear that you were trying to get a score that's in range (it becomes a concern when your score is already in range i.e. 700+ and you're still trying to re-take it). There is no technical limit, but if you take it like five times it may be a concern -- two or three times is fine.
Overall, it sounds like you have a pretty good handle on your candidacy and where you stand -- the schools you listed are in range. No true safety schools there, but schools where you have a reasonable shot of getting into (and given where you're at in your career, I don't think the safety schools outside the top 16 are worth applying to).
Four schools total is fine, although you can probably afford to apply to 5-6 (but no more than that). Maybe add Kellogg (they have strong base of students seeking manufacturing/leadership development program/industry careers), and you should either apply to HBS or Tuck (depending on whether you want to play it safe with Tuck, or just put your hat in the ring with HBS and see how it goes).
White guys in leadership development programs for a highly reputable/admired company (J&J) with decent extracurriculars is a strong profile for top b-schools -- you're very employable post-MBA and schools know that (i.e. should you go to a top school, you'll be courted by major companies as well as all the big consulting firms).
