Hello,
I’d very much appreciate if you could evaluate my profile and perhaps offer some advice. I’m planning on applying fall 2010. My focus is on UCLA full time program but would also like to hear if I have the makeup for NYU, Chicago, and Columbia.
Age: 29
Gender: M
Nationality: American
Certificate: CFA
Education: 3.71 GPA, Arizona State University, Major: Financial Management. Self financed college worked 35hrs per week in addition to buying, remolding, and selling a real estate property
GMAT: 670 (85%) (Q: 44 (69%), V:38 (83%)) Took GMAT twice first time score: 610
Work Experience: 5yr at matriculation in Fall 2011 w/ large very prestigious So Cal investment management firm.
8/2007-present: Portfolio Management (w/ lots of exposure to world renowned investors)
8/2006-8/2007: Client Services
Community/Extra curricular work:
Special Olympics (25hr/yr)
Kids golf camp (50hr/yr)
Various volunteer work (30hr/hr)
Letter of Recs:
1) Manager: High Level EVP, Head of a trading desk
2) Colleague: High Level MD or EVP
Potential Weaknesses in profile:
Obviously GMAT
Started undergrad at community college and didn’t get the best grades to start. Had major life experience that contributed. Finish strong receiving high marks ultimately graduated magna cum laude.
What are my chances for UCLA, NYU, Chicago, and Columbia?
Should I take the GMAT for a third time?
What can I do to improve my prospects?

To answer your questions:
1. Hard to say based on this limited information (e.g., what exactly do you do at your investment firm?), but you're probably on the edge in terms of competitiveness at those schools. How come you'll only have five years of full-time experience by the time you matriculate? Given your age, it looks like there's a gap in there.
2. Your GMAT score (esp. your quant score) is low enough that you should consider retaking it if those are your dream schools. Ideally your quant and verbal scores will each at least be in the 80th percentile.
3. You mention some community involvement, but are you actually leading things and making things happen, or just showing up to a few events every year? Admissions officers LOVE the former, and don't care about the latter. Make sure to get some actual leadership experience under your belt -- ideally, a year from now, you can point to two or three things and say, "Those would not have happened if I hadn't been there."
