Hi All,
Few pointers before you look at my profile:
a>Planning to apply for the class of 2017- i.e. MBA starting 2015
b>GMAT is coming up in 2 weeks when I get a break. Mocks have been projecting a 650-700 score. Do not have time to retake if I go a bit below.
c>I would want to change to Marketing post MBA. Want to relate the experience gathered in gathering sponsorship for sailing round the world to post MBA plans.
d>I want to go to a top B school in the US. If not I am looking at Rotman/Ivey or European B schools. Worst case NUS/NTU.
Right now on a sabbatical from work and sailing a round the world yacht race, will have very less time after I come back to get in for R1.

a> Bachelors in Mass Media(Journalism): 3.9 GPA - From college ranked in Top 5 for Humanities.
b> Graduate Certificate in Public Policy- From a think tank.
Issues with education background: Engineering dropout.
Work Exp:
Product Ops Associate, Google Inc.- 4 years
Major experience in leading global teams and speaking assignments in Middle East and across India.
Non Engineer working in an engineering team
Founder Partner- Pelican Yachts.
Yacht building firm. I worked on it for a year before taking up the Google job.
Extra Curricular:
a> 2 time National Offshore Yachting champion
b> First Indian to sail the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race- 40000 Nautical Miles round the world.
^Lead a sponsorship and fundraising campaign for participation in the race.
c> Brand Ambassador for a NGO working for the Urban Poor in India with speaking assignments for the NGO in Australia, US and Singapore.
d> Elected on the Yachting Association of India Events committee 2009-2012.
Work involved preparing National Sailing Calendar for competitive sailing in India and gradation of events.
Awaiting elections for committee from 2013-17.

I believe I have offered input on your application elsewhere because 3.9 and yachting around-the-world stays with you.
The real question is how much would your truly unique background mitigate a sub-par GMAT score from the most competitive applicant group. Also, what do you consider top (in terms of approximate ranking).I believe that, with a close to 700 GMAT score, one of the schools within Top 8-15 would accept you, assuming your application is strong (i.e. really presents your uniqueness and value to the school in a manner which is important to the school). But this might require you to apply to a good number of these schools so that your unique story is the compelling factor. You, of course, can increase your chances (and possibly reach into the Top 4-7) with a 700+ score.
Finally, top European schools might specifically value your yachting experience (not just as a unique selling point) in that several top European schools (INSEAD, LBS, Bocconi, Cranfield, MIP and Milano) compete in a Sailing League (https://mbasailing.com/regattas/globalmbatrophy & https://www.insead.edu/mba/clubs/sailing/). So, obviously, I would recommend you apply to INSEAD and LBS.
