Hi,
I've just taken my GMAT and am in the process of finalising my choices of schools to apply to, so would very much appreciate any feedback that you are willing to give.
Here are the basics:
MeWhite British male, 29-30 on matriculation.
GMAT750 - Q48, V44 (82% and 97% respectively)
Education:3.5ish undergraduate arts degree at Cambridge University (upper second class degree)
3.7ish postgraduate arts degree at University of London (a high Merit, which is the second best grade after Distinction)
Using this conversion table:
https://www.mba.com/mba/schoolsandprograms/applytoschools/youracademicrecord.htmWork experience: Approximately 3 years working for nonprofits in international development in the fundraising function, including a 6-month period working in sub-saharan Africa.
Letters of recommendation:Should be pretty good. I have a good relationship with my line manager and the director of my organisation, both of whom are happy to write recommendations for me.
Extracurricular:Took on substantial voluntary events management role in final year of undergrad. Was class representative to faculty in second year of Masters. Have been involved in various sports teams and played in a band for several years to a semi-professional level. Was recently involved in supporting a non-profit online start-up but am less involved now.
Ambitions:
Short-to-mid-term I'm looking to make a big switch into management consulting. I have a small bit of experience working for a strategy consulting firm for a month but have more research to do. Long-term my plan is to get involved in social entrepreneurship, ideally through a new initiative in partnership with a small number of partners.
What I'm looking for from a business school:I want to find a school that is strong in consulting, that has an intelligent and varied student body (I want to spend my MBA years getting to know people who are likely to be doing interesting and innovative things 5-10 years from now), that encourages collaborative ways of working, and ideally is based in or near a major financial centre. Ideally it would also have a strong alumni network and brand. A non-profit focus is nice but non-essential as I feel confident that in that side of things in terms of the networks and experiences I already have. The consulting side is more important as I will need support in making that transition.
Geographically, I am looking primarily at east coast USA, although I am open to suggestions if there is a particularly good 'fit' school elsewhere that I have so far overlooked.
Financial aid is also a relevant factor, since I have not had the opportunity to accumulate substantial savings due to the additional study I have done and the relatively low wages in the international development sector. If my chances of obtaining financial aid are substantially greater at one school than they are at another comparable school then I will have to take that seriously into consideration.
Schools I'm looking at so farSo far I've done the most research into Yale SOM and Rotman at U of Toronto. I have considered others of course but am very curious to see what others people feel are a good fit with my profile and criteria.
Any thoughts on schools that may be a particularly good fit, or general comments on apparent strengths or weaknesses in my profile would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Matt
