Dear Vantage Point,

Please could you provide me with an evaluation of my profile:

28yo male, Korean (US & UK Citizen)
Columbia University, Mechanical Engineering, 3.67, graduated 2011
Fellowship program, 7 months (including internship ngo in D.C.)
Operated 30 seat restaurant in Seoul, 1.5 years
Healthcare internship 1 month
Medical Device Startup 6 months (current)

Extracurriculars:
Captain of rugby club, Columbia University
Teach North Korean Refugees, Tutor

I applied to Rd 2 last year to the following schools:
Wharton (rejected)
CBS (rejected)
Ross (waitlisted without interview, rejected)
Fuqua (waitlisted without interview, rejected)
Johnson (MBA/MHA dual degree - accepted, but couldn't attend for personal reasons)

This year I am targeting the following schools:
Sloan
Haas
CBS
Ross
Fuqua
(Johnson)
(Stern)

I hope to work in a strategy role in the healthcare industry and have been trying to target schools with good healthcare programs.

I understand that I have a very patchy work history (several gaps greater than 3 months) and an apparent lack of focus (which I have tried to correct by joining my current company, a medical device startup) - but I am curious as to whether my target list of schools seems appropriate. Your evaluation and advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi there,

I’m sorry to hear about the outcome of your prior year applications but it sounds like you’ve taken some good steps in strengthening your profile since then. I think you hit the nail on the head – that your work experience was a weak point in your applications. You don’t mention your GMAT score but I assume that it is within range for your target schools.

So my next question for you is “is one year in your current role with the medical device start-up long enough to have meaningful leadership experience and impact?” If yes, then you’ll want to really emphasize that in your applications. Your extra-curriculars are another place where you can strengthen your profile and demonstrate leadership. I see that as a huge opportunity for you between now and the R1 2017 deadlines since your post-college ECs seem pretty light.

In terms of schools, I would say your list does seem a bit top heavy. Not that you shouldn’t apply to your dream schools but I would also balance that out with some programs that still offer the strong healthcare programming you’re looking for but are also a bit less competitive from an admissions standpoint. With that in mind, I would shave off one or two of Sloan/Haas/CBS and add back Johnson (since you were already admitted there once) as well as schools like UT Austin, Tepper, and/or UNC to round out your list. That way you’re hedging your bets while still trying for a couple top 10 programs.

I hope that helps! Best of luck with your applications & let us know if we can help further.

Kindly,
Melody
