Hi,

I'm an Indian candidate looking to apply for B-schools in Canada (due to ease of PR) primarily but I'm open to any country with an inclination towards Operations Specialization; I'm looking forward to all/any suggestions you have so that I can improve my overall profile. Further details below:

Target schools: Rotman (Canada), Ivey (Canada) - Chose Canada due to PR, though suggestions are welcome

B.Tech ( Electrical Eng.) : CGPA - 8.3/10
GMAT Score: 700-720 (Expected)
Age: 27

Work Experience: 3 years as a Junior Engineer at Tata Steel Limited, where I’m responsible for daily and breakdown maintenance of a 3MTP Steel Plant. Closely worked in a multidisciplinary environment with vendors such as Siemens, L&T, ABB SMS SIEMAG etc for solving problems related to production along with follow-up. Also responsible for planning and execution of monthly shutdowns and yearly major shutdowns. I’ve also lead a small team of 7 in SGA Activity related to Kaizen for over a year; completing projects that have improved productivity and downtime of the production plant.

EC:
- Several Marathon Running Certificates for Social Welfare
- Total of 3 Research Paper Published (2 IEEE, 1 Springer)
- 1 Month Internship with TeamEverestNGO for fundraising of COVID-19
- Creative Writing Course from Internshala
- Published a short story for a digital quarterly magazine “Out of Print”
- 1 Month Internship at Tata Steel before joining Full-Time

Future Goals -
I want to complete my MBA with Operations as a specialization. I would like to work as an Operation Consultant and grow further ahead in my career to be Operation or Production Manager.

Thanks in advance!

- Md Saif

• Is 3 years a good enough experience of should I wait another year?
• Any further suggestions to improve my profile?

Hi Md Saif,

I assume you mean you have already completed 3 years of work experience? If so, you will have over 4 years of experience when you join your MBA next fall. This is optimal and close to the median for most B-schools.

Canada is a great option if you are looking for ease of getting visas or PR, other options that can be considered are Australia, Netherlands, Germany etc.

I would suggest that you try to break the 720 mark in your GMAT. You come from a fairly competitive pool and a higher GMAT will give you an edge over other candidates. Your ECs seem more of independent events rather than a cohesive interest. If possible, try to showcase your long-term interest in non-work related activities. It's important to adcoms that you come across as a well-rounded interesting individual.

Feel free to drop a line to [email protected] if you would like to discuss further.

Hi Shaashwat,

You have a decent profile with 5 years of experience, which is above average for Canadian MBA programs. Working at HCL also gives you good corporate exposure and will make you easily employable in the campus placements. Your EC activities are also quite extensive and provide a holistic overview of your profile.

The weakness primarily lies in the Academics section which can be overcome by addressing the essay questions properly and creating strong answers. We can help you edit your resume and essays and mentor you to get the admit at the mentioned B-Schools.

I am mentioning a few more programs which you can look into:

1) Concordia University: John Molson (Canada)
2) University of Alberta (Canada)
3) Simon Fraser: Beedie School (Canada)
4) St. Mary's University (Canada)
5) McMaster Degroote (Canada)
6) Telfer School of Management (Canada)
7) Lancaster University (UK)
8) Copenhagen Business School (Denmark)
9) Lisbon MBA (Portugal)

We have had admits to these programs with GMAT scores similar to yours. If you like we can also discuss in detail the schools and admission chances.

You can visit our Website or try our Intelligent B-School Selector Tool for a better evaluation.

Hello saifmd129,

Thanks for the details.

If you have completed 3 years of experience, you needn't wait any longer unless you anticipate some major changes to your profile. Canada is definitely a good choice; however, it is also extremely competitive and with the schools you are targeting, you must aim for a score upwards of 720. Needless to say, the US too is a great geography to pursue the Operations specialisation.

With leadership experience and impactful initiatives at work, your professional profile looks good; the extra-curricular activities, though, ok, aren't stellar; needless to say, focus on your GMAT and once that is out of the way, focus on working on a set of compelling essays. :-)

All the best!
