Anyone? You can tell me if those universities are out of my league :P . I would be willing (thrilled in fact) to apply for next year at the later rounds if I could still be competitive. I'd definately apply to a backup school or two.

Hey everyone,

I'd appreciate it if someone could help me get an idea of my profile and how it would look to admission committees. I'm a 27 year old Qatari male with almost 5 years of work experience. I'm planning to apply in a year and a half.

Work Experience:

Started out at a bank after graduation, 3 month internship and 6 months as a credit officer. I had to leave to help run the family business due to a family tragedy and because it was struggling. I spent 4 years running the company (mainly real estate investing and development). During this time I had a lot of opportunities to prove my leadership abilities, from negotiating with many different parties to dealing with the many problems we had to confront. However, the business is small and the situation we were in (defaulting, cutting back and reorganizing) was rather strange.
I left the family business a month ago and joined a very large bank as a performance analyst at their international division. This bank has been expanding aggressively in the Middle East and Africa.

GMAT:

1st attempt: 680 (Q45, V38, IR 4)

Education:

BSBA, major in Finance and minor in economics. GPA: 3.17. Trending upwards, bad first 2 years.
CFA Chartholder

Extracurricular:

Not much to be honest. I box and I speak 3 languages. I will hopefully get a certificate for Spanish as a second language by the end of the year and possibly one for french (4th language) before I apply. I'm also planning on joining Toastmasters soon.

I want to apply for the 2017 summer intake, which gives me about a year and a half I can work with. I sat through the GMAT this morning and its much lower than my mocks (710 Q48,V40,IR8 and 730 Q47,V44). However, its within the range of the MBA's I'm interested in (IESE, HEC, ESADE).

Should I retake the gmat? Do I have a good chance of being accepted into these universities? Is there anything I can do in the next 18 months to improve my chances? The bank I joined is semi-government (as are all the larger and more influential companies). Would that hurt my chances? I joined because of the scope of the international division and the potential in learning about an often neglected part of the world. I believe that there's a good chance I might get promoted before I apply. Thanks in advance.

Hey dude,
Well, I'm not sure you really need to retake. For HEC you would be fine. It's true that for INSEAD it's a bit on the low side, but INSEAD can be very flexible when it comes to GMAT if the rest is good. the only question is, since you were mocking significantly higher, you might easily get a higher score.. and then maybe yeah...

The big question is in regards to your family business - how big it is, what the revenue is, what you did, whether you will return to it later. From a revenue perspective it seems good, but how many employees are in the company? and how many did you lead?

I don't think the recommendations should be a problem - I mean obviously you won't get one from your dad ;), but you can always find a partner or client, as an alternative to a boss if that is not possible.

I hope all this helps, and if you have any other questions, just let me know.

Best,
JF

I think it's worth applying for IESE, HEC and ESADE and I wouldn't wait longer to apply. Getting a reference from a business partner isn't ideal, but it isn't out of the realm of possibilities. That said, it shouldn't be someone you paid as you mention. Many clients of mine who come from family businesses get references from:
-Business partners
-Advisors (formal business advisors or informal mentors)
-Investors

Your experience is more impressive in your family business so I don't think waiting, getting one year older, and getting a LOR from the bank is a good idea.

Are you involved with the business at all now? It would be a great story if so.

I'm happy to give advice on who you should ask to write a letter for you if it would help.
