Dear Experts,
Sorry I am new to this, not sure if I am posting right. I am applying to
Oxford Said, Cambridge Judge, Fuqua, UVA Darden and McCombs in R1 this year. I have a
GPA of
3.46 (majored in Geology from a renowned Indian University) in undergrad. However, I failed “linear algebra” for which I reappeared next year and passed, no year loss but my transcript for that semester shows next year as the dat of issue.
Other infos:
Indian Female (29)
GRE: 329 (169Q, 160V)
Ranked 13 in national admissions test for Masters (IIT-JAM) and admitted to one of the top IITs in Applied Geology (
GPA: 3.42) and interned at a F500 OFS company. Got PPO there and recruited at the same company. I have been working there for 6 years now.
Work experience (think Schlumberger/Halliburton):- Engineer in Charge of operations: train people, monitor daily operations and allocate resources, prepare SOP, meeting with internal clients in streamlining operations and business development.
- Project Lead in 3 impactful projects- i) Domain’s curriculum development (received one of the highest awards in company) ii) ideated and led 2 automation projects (one saved 95% time and another saved 40% cost)
- involved in business development, have 2 publications, had 2 promotions, added responsibilities of handling technical content peer review (received 2 more internal awards in that)
- Global chair of LGBTQIA ERG - Organized first pride month celebration in my location, co-ordinate global events, organize webinars, liaise with DEI team and other ERGs.
ECs : yoga practitioner, volunteer teacher for neurodivergent kids, had a music band during my masters and performed competitively, started a satire blog recently (not much views though)
I plan to mention this flunking in my failure essay. I will add some personal circumstances as reason.Career goal: Strategy consulting in ESG
Why MBA : Restart career, gain leadership skills, grow network.
Questions:
- can I do something else to offset the failure at this point?
- Do you think I have a shot at Said and Judge?
Also looking for recommendations on programs I may be overlooking given my stats and goal of transitioning from pure O&G to energy transition/clean energy.
Thanks in Advance.
Hello,
NewUser992Despite struggling in your linear algebra class, your application shows that you are still fit for the best MBA programs, such as Oxford Saïd and Cambridge Judge. It is therefore important to discuss this failure well in your application; maybe you could write an essay about overcoming it, which can show how strong you were to pass the course afterward. Enrolling in an additional quantitative course or getting certified would re-emphasize your commitment to academics. Getting 169 in the GRE quants is a big asset, so highlight that.
Your GPA of 3.46 along with your highly impressive professional history revolving around ESG, brings value to your application. Clearly state your leadership experiences and quantify your accomplishments to demonstrate their magnitude. In your essays, tell them why you want an MBA now and how it fits into the career strategy consulting path in the energy transition space.
To improve your applications, make sure that those who recommend you place emphasis on leadership skills and ability to succeed. For instance, one way of doing this is by engaging in sustainability related extracurricular activities during the college years, which could help build our narrative stronger . You may need to revise a personal statement with clear motivations for pursuing an MBA accordingly.
Other schools to look into could include Yale SOM, Stanford GSB, UC Berkeley Haas, and MIT Sloan for courses that could help in the career transition process. Other recognized choices are Ross, Darden, and Fuqua. If you discuss the difficulties that occurred and reveal your advantages, you will have a better chance of being admitted. You have a great chance of getting into Oxford Saïd, Cambridge Judge, and other similar programs that meet your objectives in the energy transition industry.
