Dear Experts,

I wish to apply for a full time MBA degree in HEC Paris, INSEAD and LBS. Please evaluate my profile and advice me on the areas that need improvement.

Nationality : Indian
Age : 26
Gender : Male
GMAT : 660(Q40,V41)

Education : BE(Hons.) in Electronics and Instrumentation from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Dubai Campus
GPA: 3.4
During undergrad, I interned at two multinational firms in Dubai and worked on a project on improving in-flight damage analysis of air-crafts with an R&D institute in Germany.

Work Experience: 5+ years
After graduating in 2012, I have been working in the offshore oil and gas drilling industry. I joined a multinational offshore drilling company as a trainee Electronic Technician and currently I am the youngest Electronic Tech. in my company. My jobs include maintenance, servicing and troubleshooting various equipment on-board the offshore vessels. The job demands rigorous planning and accurate analysis of the problems in order to solve them within the shortest period of time to cut down losses by avoiding downtime.
Apart from the technical jobs, my responsibilities include updating inventory of the equipment and spares, managing a team of 4, ordering equipment and spares, calculating yearly budgets, cutting down operational costs, communicating with the client and understanding there requirements, enhancing the safety standards of the rig and making sure that my team stays stress free and motivated. In the last five years I have won safety awards and man of the month award for up-keeping the safety standards of the rigs and implementing innovative techniques to improve ease and safety of operations.
My work has taken me to various offshore drilling vessels in Iran and India.

Apart from work I love to travel. I have traveled to countries in Europe, South East Asia and Middle East. I have been trained in Indian classical music (vocal and instrumental) and have won awards in singing, speaking and acting competitions in school and undergrad. I have been a part of the basketball and boxing teams during my undergrad and was also the feather-weight boxing champion.

In 2012 I opened an NGO, which focuses on teaching classical music to the underprivileged citizens. I have also been a part of a project concerned with studying the effects of classical music on prisoners with life sentences.

Currently, apart from my offshore job, I am involved in a start-up in the food industry. This is my second start-up after a failed one.

Your expert and valuable input is much appreciated.

Thank you

Dkingdom

Hey there! Good to hear from you!
So let me start off by stating the obvious: Your big challenge will be the GMAT here. LBS will be impossible with your current GMAT score, and INSEAD very tough, and HEC a bit tough.

So first thing is that you may want to consider retaking. This is especially an option since both HEC and INSEAD have January intakes, which means that if you apply six months later, it's not a big deal.

Anyhow let's start by suggesting some reading:

https://admissionado.com/mba/3-tips-for- ... n=mba_blog
https://admissionado.com/mba/to-retake-o ... n=mba_blog

Other than that, you are in a good industry, and it's nice that you are the "youngest" which shows a speedy progress, and is something that MBA programs value highly.

But I need a bit more info from you - employer name, titles, promotions, greatest achievements, volunteer work, sports, community service, religious involvement, leadership.. etc. before I can give you a real evaluation.

Also, are you open to other schools? In Europe? In America?
And what are your goals?

Best,
JF

I hope this helps! And feel free to drop us a line for a free consultation.

Hello JF,

Thank you for the information. Even I believe that with my current GMAT score, my possibility of getting into one of the top MBA schools is not very good.
Information that you requested:
1) Employer Name : Aban Offshore Ltd.
2) Title : Electronic Technician
3) Promotions : I had joined Aban as a Trainee ET in 2012. I got promoted to the post of Assistant ET in 2013 and to the post of ET in 2014.
4) Greatest Achievements :
a) Job : Quickest promotions in the history of the company. Youngest HOD, leading a team of 4. Troubleshooted major drilling equipment without any external support in record time, thus
avoiding downtime and loss of thousands of dollars of the company.
b) Life : My greatest achievement till date in life has been the NGO that I had started back in 2012. It always has been my dream to help the underprivileged citizens in some way. I and my
team have taught the basics of Indian classical music to almost 1500 people in the age group of 7 years-65 years.
5) Sports : I have always been passionate about cricket, but during undergrad I developed a taste for basket ball and boxing. Being the shortest player on the basketball team, I had to work really
hard to improve and overcome my shortcomings. I started training for boxing in 2009 and became the feather-weight champion of the college in 2010.
6) Leadership : My life experiences have taught me that a good leader is always able to understand the other person's point of view and act accordingly. Be in my job or my community projects, I
always keep that principle in mind. Being a good listener and a keen observer has also helped me in getting my team out of tricky situations on the oil rig and succeed under severe pressure.
Five years in oil industry have taught me to keep my emotions under control in any given condition. This trait has helped me lead in a better way and earn respect of my colleagues.

As you already know that I am working in the core fossil fuel energy sector, I wish to switch to the clean energy sector.
After MBA I wish to join a firm that focuses on the development and application of clean energy. I wish to join such a firm as a business development consultant, so that I can device better and cheaper strategies to bring clean energy to the backward areas of the community.
Honestly I have not yet given a lot of thought to school selection. But since I wish to be a part of a multicultural class during my MBA, I opted for those three schools.

I hope I have answered your questions.
Please let me know if more information is needed from my end.

Hey there,
thanks for the additional information. It is very helpful.
Reading through your profile and knowing your GMAT score, my first reaction/advice, is that you should consider retaking the GMAT to aim for at least a 710, and do so even at the expense of waiting another half year or full year to apply. Your profile has some good stuff in it, and I especially like your NGO work, but overall in comparison with your competitors it is not likely to be more strong, and thus the necessity of you applying with as strong a GMAT as is possible.

Your other alternative would be to compromise on your school list, which is honestly speaking also a very good alternative. Yet, I feel that you are young enough that you can give your GMAT more time to ensure that you are applying with the highest possible score.

I hope this helps!
Best,
JF

Hi JF,
Thank you for the detailed analysis of my profile. And my apologies for the late reply. Crazy amount of work since past few days.

Well I definitely agree with you. I am preparing for my next attempt of GMAT and targeting a score of 720-750.

Can you please advice me on other B-schools that might help me achieve my goal, which I had stated earlier.

Thanks

Hey there,
Well other than aiming for Top schools, good school since the US with oil/or energy focuses are Haas, McCombs and Rice. In Europe there have got a be a few, and often in countries with offshore rigs, so I suppose you might find something in Norway, in Scotland etc. Although they don't have any good ranked MBA programs, so I don't know them in detail as they are not top programs, but I suppose they could be an option if you were interested in living there. Otherwise a plain old general management MBA from the best school you can go to, will be good for corporate or finance or operations in any number of industries, Oil and gas included.

Hope this helps!

And good luck on your retake!
Best,
JF
