Hi, I would really appreciate some insight into my profile.
I am 28-years old, born in one of the East Asian countries but raised in the US (US Citizen), and attended elementary~college in the US (top 10 public west-coast university).
GPA: 3.57/4.0
GMAT: 730(49Q/40V/8IR/5.5AWA)
College: Top 10 public west-coast university. Majored in Finance
Work experience: Came back to East Asia to re-experience the culture here and get a different/new perspective professionally. Worked for 1.5 years at a major East Asian consumer retail company in the in-house Mergers and Acquisitions team. Traveled abroad extensively for meetings with ownership groups of acquisition targets. Took part in numerous deals with two successful deals (one being a ~$200 cross-border acquisition). Moved to a Big 4 firm in East Asia to the Transaction Services team to really learn the technical aspects of deal execution (modelling, etc.) and have been working here for 3 years for a total of ~4.5 years in East Asia (took part in numerous cross-border deals, albeit small to mid in size)
Extra-curriculars: Volunteer English teacher at local church. Member of basketball club/group at current company. Sometimes take part in volunteer activities sponsored by company.
Why MBA: Looking to leverage my unique experience in a buy-side/in-house M&A team, and a FAS firm to go back to the US to get into the private equity industry focusing on consumer retail.
I'm looking to apply to the top-tier (4 or 5 out of the M7) schools, especially the strong finance schools that would give me the networking/knowledge/credentials to ultimately help me get into the PE industry.
Thank you so much in advance, I would really appreciate some constructive feedback. Any and all comments are welcome!
Hey there,
Well when you are aiming so high, every detail matters, so I'd love to hear a bit more detail about your work experience especially. But basically although I don't necessarily see you as a shoe-in, I think you would have a shot. I don't know if Top 7 only or S16... as it depends ont he detail and on your story, but basically you have the GMAT, the GPA, and what seems to be good work experience. You have some good volunteer work. And there's no real weakness. The only thing is I don't yet see something amazingly unique or amazingly stellar. (It doesn't mean it's not there!). Like you will be up against people with better GPAs from better schools with more preferred employers. So if you really want to get in an M7 esp a finance related one, you have to show them why they should take you rather than that Columbia grad with a 3.7 who works for Goldman Sachs... if you get my drift...
I hope this helps! And feel free to drop us a line for a
free consultation.
Best,
Jon
