Hi,

I am planning to apply for various programs in the Fall 2014 intake , would be obliged if you evaluate my profile

Demographics: Indian / Female / Age 26
Academics: Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, 2008. GPA: 3.77 / 4. Pune University: Maharashtra Institute of Technology, India.
GMAT: 670 (Q 44, V38)
TOEFL: 114
Work Experience: 4.5 years experience as a Project Manager in a Fortune 500 Automobile company (Manufacturing), joined as Assistant Manager promoted to Manager within 2 yrs
1. Managed related functions across the company in development of new products from concept to launch
2. Planned detail engineering activities based on customer and design requirements
3. Control on investments and product cost through business case
Extra-curricular:
1. Joint Secretary of college Magazine commitee
2. Organizing committee member of college SAE technical events
3. Community activities at Church, Joint Secy of Youth Group
4. Anchor at Vendor Meets, department farewell, church events
5. Mentoring program for underprivileged children through company

My target programs: HBS, MIT Sloan, Yale, Stanford, Cornell (Johnson)
I am interested in a Marketing / Strategy profile post-MBA

My questions:
1. What are my chances for getting admitted in these programs?
1. Do I need to retake the GMAT to improve my Quant score currently at 63 percentile? I retook the GMAT once with only a minor improvement in Quant scores
2. Can I instead write the GRE, since all the schools I am aiming for accept GRE scores

Thanks for your post. To answer your questions:

1) I think your chances are poor, mainly because your GMAT is significantly below these school's average and you come from an over-represented group in the applicant pool. At the same time, your experience and progression as a woman in the male-dominated, automotive industry and in your extra-curricular activities is a plus.
2. You either need to improve your quant score or add program to you target list where you have a better chance of getting accepted.
3. You can try that if you think you will have a better percentile score on the GRE.

consider Broad, Kelley, UNC, Purdue, UT Austin, and maybe CMU Tepper.

Dear Linda,

Thank you for your advice! I have two questions:

1.
I took the GRE and have improved my quantitative percentile to 96%, my score is 322 Q166 V157.
There has been no other change in my profile, could you please evaluate my chances at MIT Sloan, Yale & Columbia.
I am confused between Yale and Columbia, which do you think is a better fit for me considering my background and post-MBA goals?

2.
I have a cumulative work experience of 4.5 years from July 2008 - January 2013. I am currently pursuing my MBA at a lesser known college in the US, however, I really wish to enter a top-10 college, hence am re-applying for Fall 2014. Do you think this will be considered as a disadvantage in my application?

You're welcome. To answer your questions:

1. HBS, MIT, and Stanford are major stretches for you. I would discourage your application. Yale and Cornell are also stretches, but I think you have somewhat of a chance there.
2. If you think you can improve your score (and you should be able to considering your grades and academic background) and you want to have a serious chance at your target programs, you should retake the GMAT.. However, change something about your approach to preparation that you think will improve your score.
