Hi guys! I'm 21/F from India and I'm planning to apply for the MFE program at Oxford. My undergrad was Bsc Statistics (highly quantitative course) from one of the top 10 colleges in India. My GPA is 7.8/10 and GRE 323 (163 quant 160 verbal). I've had two internships - one of them was in a boutique investment bank and the other one in the branding team of Ernst & Young.
Currently I have two options -
A) I have an offer from BCG Knowledge for a knowledge analyst role in the private equity practice (it's a backend role)
b) i have an offer to intern at a small VC firm for 6 months at the end of which they would evaluate me and take me in as an associate if they want to

1) which of the above two options will increase my chances of getting into Oxford MFE and an IB/VC job post MFE?
2) what are my chances of getting into Oxford with the given scores and profile in general?

Let me know what you guys think!

Hi arushi7,

Thank you for your note. MBAs are my specific area of expertise, so I unfortunately won't be able to offer you nuanced input with respect to the Oxford MFE program and how your profile and scores might stack up there.

Of the two professional paths you've mentioned, I am more intrigued by the second one (VC), especially if the BCG role is a back-office type role and the VC role is more truly an investment / associate role. (Is that what you mean by "backend" role?) On top of that, if you're interested in VC after graduate school, it will be nice to already have direct experience in the field.

VC can be a very difficult field to break into, folks from leading consulting firms like BCG often try to transition into PE/VC, and you have the opportunity for an associate position if you prove yourself over the first six months. For these reasons, I'd be more drawn to the VC job, provided the firm is strong and you are comfortable with the uncertainty of a six-month offer compared with a presumably full-time offer at BCG.

Hope this helps. Those are two nice options, so congratulations on securing them. Best of luck to you!

Thanks,
Greg
