Hi All,
First - thank you for reviewing my post and apologies if it is not up to par. This is my first post on the forum. I’ve been a lurker for a while and decided it’s time to make my first post.
I’d like to ask for a profile evaluation from admissions consultants. I’d love to hear honest, constructive feedback on my candidacy and how I can improve if you have any suggestions.
Profile:
5 years of work experience in Recruitment/HR. I’ve been a project manager in HR for the last year. Helping deploy global talent / culture programs in a bulge bracket investment bank.
GMAT target score: 720
Undergrad (3.3 GPA) at a small private university - not really on the radar anywhere to be honest.
Tried my hand at an MS and didn’t finish it up because work got in the way. Wasn’t my smartest move considering I tried to keep a full class load with a full work schedule. GPA was 2.7. I plan to explain this in the optional essays.
I’m a Hispanic male and first generation college student.
Extracurricular activities - mentor for a HS student for 2 years, Math tutor at a middle school for a year, and alumni board member at my university for the past 4 years.
Post MBA I’d like to go into Management Consulting in the Human Capital space. Hopefully MBB or a Tier 2. Not sure if my project management experience at BB bank helps here.
Ideally I’d like to gain admission to either Stern or Columbia, but realize the uphill battle I have. I will also consider SC Johnson, Fuqua, and Ross.
Please let me know if you need any further info to provide an evaluation!

Thank you for your post and for sharing your profile. Your professional experience seems solid, although I would like to learn more about your accomplishments in the past 5 years. The fact that your experience is in BB bank can help with your transition to consulting. Your ECs seem pretty good as well. It is clear that you are involved in your community, and, correct me if I'm wrong, better education seems to be your area of interest. I would love to learn more about your contribution and accomplishments in this area and see how they can add value to your presentation of your values and character.
As to your academics, I would like to see an increased GMAT score to offset your undergrad and MS GPA. Indeed, your GPA and MS experience can be discussed in an addendum, but if at all possible, having a stronger than the target school's average GMAT will help strengthen the message. Top MBA programs look at your profile holistically. While academics are an important component of the admissions decisions, the adcom also wants to ensure they accept applicants that fit their culture and are leaders who positively affecting the world in which they serve. It will be important that you convey your experiences in a succinct way, and showcase the strength you will bring to the classroom and beyond.
You have put together a strong target list, with Columbia being your stretch school. Each program is a little different so you want to be mindful of their differences as you prepare your case.

Thanks for posting! Let's get right down to it.
First, the good - well, very good! As a first generation URM college grad working for a bulge bracket bank, you've set yourself up well from a background standpoint. And while you aren't a banker, human capital is a growing industry and one that requires great organizational and communication skills, things that business schools love to see. How has your progression at work been compared to your peers?
Your extracirriculars are good, not stellar. How involved are you with the board seat? Is it something that requires significant time or is it mostly ceremonial? I'm sure we could draw out other passions/interests to add here, as leadership experience does not necessarily have to come from the workplace or a direct EC.
Academics: For CBS, I'd love to see you around 720-740, preferably on the high end. A higher GMAT will offset both the low undergrad and MS GPA. Have you taken any practice tests or have any data points to go off of yet for this? I'd say for the rest of your schools, like Ross and Stern, over 700 will make you competitive. Johnson I think you could get a look with a 680-690 but I would still try to score as high as possible.
So, you've got a lot of good things going here, but a lot of your success will come down to the GMAT score. Have you begun studying and formulating a plan of action yet?
