Hi Kalyan -
Thanks for your note.
As you know, the unfortunate reality is that as an Indian engineer the reality is that you’re in a really competitive applicant pool. As such, I would highly recommend that you look at taking the GMAT again as you’re pretty well below the average scores for a lot of the schools that you’re looking at. Was the 620 where you had been testing on your practice tests, or was it significantly below? Before you go ahead and re-take the GMAT, ask yourself whether you think you can do significantly better. Ie. are you able to invest the time in studying 10+ hours per week for the next couple of months?
Regarding your work experience, it sounds like you’ve done some cool stuff already. When you say that you “Lead the web development department of my team,” does that mean from a development standpoint, or a product one? Ie. are you involved in the business side of the decision making regarding projects, or are you managing the execution side only?
The big question that I have is why you’re looking at going back to school so soon. Two years experience is on the very, very low end for business schools. Harvard and a few other hyper elite schools look for students with only a few years of experience, but most don’t. Is there a specific reason why you can’t focus on your career for the next couple of years, take the GMAT again, and then apply? Even if you don’t address the GMAT, strengthened work experience will help to offset this.
In addition, if you’re set on applying this year, I would strongly recommend that you focus on your extracurriculars and other things that are unique and can potentially distinguish you from other Indian engineering applicants. Don't write any stories / essays that other Indian engineers could write
Hope this helps and best of luck!
