MBA Info
• Why I want an MBA: Looking to change industries or to be more specific, move into a role that’s not likely redundant in the years to come. Hoping to upskill and transform myself to move into more growth focused industries or roles, understand how businesses work across multiple industries, be more mobile and employable in roles which have better exit opps than my current job. Part of me has always had an entrepreneurial mindset, inherited from side hustles and from my current job scope where Im constantly scaling and growing client base to expand the company’s reach (albeit small and limited clientele as we’re an extremely niche industry). Last but not least im working in what you’d call a “sunshine Industry” where we have a shrinking workforce, shrinking revenue for front office employees and this shift has been accelerated partly by tech and partly by the covid crisis whereby volumes have shrunk tremendously forcing industry to cut costs with no signs of comeback.
• Why I want one now: Ive been working for 5+ years in finance, and Im at an age where I want to push onto higher management and responsibility roles, I honestly feel my personal development has hit a ceiling and upward movement has stalled for a while cause of the extremely flat management structure that exists in our firm and industry as a whole. Another reason why im looking to do one now is that multiple consultants have mentioned that US schools prefer students between 3-6 years of experience so I really feel this is my last decent chance to get into one of the good US B Schools. Last but not least I am looking to leave Singapore and settle down in Europe / Middle East and start a family post my studies (I am currently married so will be attending school with a partner)
• Target schools: M7, Insead, LBS, Oxbridge (still in early days of research)
Background
• Work experience: 5+ years all in Finance. Starting off as a junior trader in London, work permit issues forced me to pivot to Singapore and work as an Interbank broker for FX and Fixed Income markets, whereby I started as a junior trainee and worked myself upto a Senior broker helping establish the company’s brand and market share from 0 to being near the top. Job in itself is quite fun whereby you do a lot of varied work per day from handling workflow processes to training juniors and mentoring new entrants (which I enjoy the most) and scoring trades with clients to bring in revenue. Moving into energy and commodities as they were looking for a young but experienced guy to build the companies flagging commodity business.
• Extra curriculars and other experience: Very involved and in the animal rights sector, playing lower league football in Singapore.
• Undergrad school/major: The University of Edinburgh/ MA Hons Accounting and Finance
• Other education/coursework: N/A
• Race/nationality: Indian/ Indian (international background, grew up in a diverse environment across different countries, sadly never actually lived in India)
• Sex: Male
Stats
• GMAT Score: 770 Q51, V44
• Undergrad GPA: 3.0 (didn’t take university as seriously as I should have, hoping GMAT score can help offset this. Performed well in quantitative finance subjects, lost badly on higher grade weightage subjects like my thesis and other theoretical based subjects)
